SXSW: New batch of bands
@ZackTeibloom For those sick of fake Bonnaroo line-ups, we have a real new batch of SXSW 2010 bands. And they’re pretty damn good. Of the 55 new bands, I’ve seen 6 and have rave reviews for all of them. Balkan Beat Box used to fly in from Israel just to headline the under-appreciated Lotus festival in Bloomington, In. and they’re a force with a mix of gypsy punk and hip hop. Yeah, be excited for that one. !!! is deserving of all the exclamation points, Les Savy Fav tore you a new one when he was here for Fun Fun Fun and you can expect more of the same from their bulbous front man. Miike Snow put out one of the best albums of last year and their live show matches the album. We saw hometown heroes, Spoon last week and it’s never too soon for more. Read the rest of this entry »
Temper Trap Contest winner
@ZackTeibloom Our winning entry comes from Shelley, a Chicago-Austin transplant like me, who had an even more interesting chain of events on her drive than I did. All I had to put up with was a blizzard and frozen highway that almost killed me and stopped my dream of having Reverend Al Green take me [...]
The Dead Weather 2010 Tour Dates Announced
Third Man Vault posted details on The Dead Weather’s upcoming 11-date two week tour in late April, continuing into May. Pre-sale is currently only available for Third Man Vault members, which I’m happy to say I am. Here in Austin, we’ll be saying goodbye to April showers and bringing in May flowers with a month-ending [...]
“Picture yourself” at a Spoon In-store performance
@ZackTeibloom Picture yourself in the Waterloo parking lot. The nicest January day you’ve ever felt. A shield-your-eyes-it’s-so-sunny afternoon. Picture the biggest band to come out of Austin in the last decade playing for free. It feels like I’m quoting a Spoon song, doesn’t it? Actually, I’m kind of quoting two. It’s the kind of thing [...]
American Idol Auditions The Best of the Rest
@AndyShore Tonight’s auditions have been labeled the best of the rest. That’s saying one of two things. The first option is they had an extra night in the schedule so they mustered up the not as spectacular or funny auditions for one more episode. That, or the rest of the the cities weren’t important [...]
Catchiest Jingle: Bagel Bites vs. Chili’s Baby Back Ribs
@ZackTeibloom Let’s get silly here for a minute. After “Pokerface” won catchiest song of the year and “Who Let The Dogs Out?” started rolling towards catchiest song of the decade, @Rwoconno, the original Festival Crasher, proclaimed on our Facebook page that Chili’s “Baby Back Ribs” jingle was actually the catchiest song ever. I countered that it [...]
Successful Crash #26 Neiliyo & Octopus Project at Mohawk
@ZackTeibloom Going to a Neiliyo show on my day off at the venue I’ve crashed the most was a given. I’ve crashed The Mohawk twice using the backdoor slider method and once when I pretended I was Neiliyo. The idea there is to go in the side door which is rarely guarded. This would have [...]
