What a day!

An exhausted Jennie Ellman checks in after her first full day at SXSW or, as the PBR drinkers call it, “South By.”

I saw and learned so much in one day that I’m still trying to process it all.

After an hour and a half of sleep at home and then sleeping on and off on the plane, I landed in Austin, met my boss at the airport and off we went to the Convention Center. There we got artist/crew passes and wristbands, which is basically my ticket to get into whatever party Austin is having in the next few days. There, I also met Peter from Peter, Bjorn and John. It was quick but he was nice.

I’m sorry to tell you that mainly for the first half of the day, there was not much music enjoyment. I mean, we’d go to parties that had bands playing, but we’d be talking to people and networking and letting them know about our events that are coming up. It was neat to see publicity in action. So most of what I’ll be talking about at this point, in terms of bands, is what I heard in the background of these discussions.

At the first party, I saw the New Puritans. They struck me as a garage band that was trying to be a little more emo. Not bad, but kind of a different mood than the atmosphere.

Then we went to the Gothamist/Austinist party. There we saw Jukebox The Ghost. They seemed really cool. I kind of wished that I would have had more time to check them out.
After that, we went to the Simply Canadian party. We saw United Steel Workers of Montreal.

I actually found the front man to be witty and their songs to be about unimportant things other than to the band. They wrote a song about a specific woman who worked at their local convenience store. They also wrote about drag racing which the singer even said “This is the best song about drag racing that we’re going to be singing this whole set!” I kind of smirked at that.

With that, we ran to the Fader/Levi’s party. We caught the tail end of The Kills. They really seemed to rock! I was sad that we missed them because I would have wanted to have seen more. We stuck around for a little talking to people and then The Ruby Suns that seemed a little too mellow after The Kills. But we only did stay for almost a full song.
