Jennie says bye bye to South By

Elijah+Wood Jennie says bye bye to South ByElijah Wood Tries ipod DJing. Jennie is not impressed.

3:30 PM – Went to the Bust party to meet some journalists, check our our venue for our showcase later that evening and caught Elijah Wood (the hobbit guy) spin. He sucked for the part that I heard him. He stood on stage. No elaborate equipment. Like, seriously an ipod and a mixer. Played with his ipod, played old songs that didn’t really sound any different and didn’t even look like he wanted to be there.

7:00 PM – Saw Hospital Bombers. They were cool. The woman in the band definitely knew how to work that violin. I definitley enjoyed them.
<----8:00 PM - BEANGROWERS! Honestly, I just think they're great. They're passionate, chilling, and completely moving. I always enjoy listening to them regardless of what mood I'm in.

10:00 PM – WE ARE STANDARD! —->>>
Honestly, the most highly energetic and danceable show of the whole week. The bar was packed. WE MAXED THE PLACE OUT! Deu, the vocals/guitar, would jump into the crowd and dance with everyone there. The drummer would literally stand on his stool and drum on the oversized liquor swag that hung from the ceiling and then would take his snare drum off the set and parade around the room as everyone was dancing and still playing their instruments. The speakers were shaking so much that the people who worked at the bar had to make sure that they weren’t going to fall over.

11:00 PM Ezra Furman and The Harpoons – This was the fourth time that I saw them that week. I really like them. I was walking around talking to people so I couldn’t watch White+Shoes+And+The+Couples+Company+2 Jennie says bye bye to South Bythem as intently as I have been. But they were energetic and had a great crowd.

The Indonesian band on the label that keeps getting compared to a band that would be on The Love Boat. It was very cool to see them since I’ve heard so much about their shows. That Chad and his friend Bryant from the night before came and it was cool to hang out with them while talking about music and stuff.

A very drunken Duo and Grace Potter

Posted by admin On March - 16 - 2008

Zack and I missed our opportunity to see the Benevento Russo Duo last weekend at Langerado, so I was excited to see that they were playing in Chicago last night. Especially since they are still on tour with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.

The+Duo+Press Photo A very drunken Duo and Grace PotterWe got there just as the Duo were starting. The Logan Square Auditorium is a weird place to see music, and the fact that it wasn’t that crowded didn’t help the ambiance. The Duo rocked though. It is amazing that so much sound comes only from two people. Marco Benevento, or Fuzzy Ravioli as he introduced himself last night, has an assortment of circuit bending toys and all sorts of other gadgets and gizmos as part of his rig. Joe Russo is an incredible drummer. So much so that later in the night when the entirety of the Nocturnals were doing a drum jam, I joked with my friend Jared t A very drunken Duo and Grace Potterhat Russo had done just as much by himself. His resonse: “If not more.”

Their merch girl told me that the two of them were pretty plastered, and at times it showed. Benevento’s mic banter was comical, but sometimes nonsensical. He blabbed about not being a puppet, and told an audience member “not to what him, I will what you.” He also rambled about tuna sandwiches and hoagies, and said that they encouraged their fans to eat them in the front row before introducing a song as “Tuna Salad.”

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals rocked about as much as they did at Langerado, despite the fact that they Logan Square Auditorium has horrible sound. The room just is not a great place to see live music. The set A very drunken Duo and Grace Potteropened with “Sweet Hands” and grace rocking her B3 organ. One highlight of the show was when the Duo joined GPN onstage for a song. Or at least Marco made it up there somewhere in the middle of it. It was really nice to hear him play straight up keys for a whole song though, without reverting to noise. Another highlight was the set closing cover of Neil Young’s “Down by the River,” which Grace owned.

All in all a great night of music, despite the not so great venue. It was just what Zack and I needed to help curb the live music withdrawal. -AS Photos of Grace Potter by Eric Weiler. Photo of Benevento Russo Duo courtesy of Madison House Publicity

Another day, another adventure for Jennie

Redwalls+2nd+show+1 Another day, another adventure for Jennie
8 PM – The Redwalls – I know them from high school. I’m very biased. I always enjoy seeing them do what they do because I feel like I know a fraction of how badly they wanted this before they had it. Phone died.

10 PM – Beangrowers. Let’s see…I have been listening to their album Not In A Million Lovers for quite a while, and I’vBeangrowers+MFN+1 Another day, another adventure for Jenniee been hanging out with them for a few days. So after getting to know them with knowing their material, I got to watch them perform which is different than how most of my band/audience relationships work. So that was cool. They were GREAT in concert. Alison Galea’s vocals just get to me every time. They’re mysterious with longing and conviction and Ian Schranz is a great drummer. I can’t wait to see their show again tomorrow.

Moby gave me the thumbs up…

Contributing writer Jennie Ellman balances her PR job while still trying to live like a Festival Crasher at SXSW…

Pictures by Jennie: Upper right: Dr. Dog. Left: Moby and Lou Reed

I saw Yo La Tengo, Thurston Moore, My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, Dr. Dog and a show that made Lou Reed get younger by the second with Moby at his side. Ezra did a great job with his cover “Heroin,” Dr. Dog was really energized and made me want to dance with them. Thurston Moore was great to see, Yo La Tengo was a blast and My Morning Jacket was exciting.
Lou+Reed+2 Moby gave me the thumbs up...
Moby and Lou Reed took the stage to do a slowed down version of “Walk On The Wild Side,” which is one of my favorites by him. It took a little for Reed to get into it but when he did there was no stopping him. Honestly, the longer he played, the younger he looked. He got to his element and it was great to see. The interaction between him and Moby was cool too. I love collaborations. It’s just the magic of the music industry to me.

Anyway, they jammed our for a little at the end of “Walk On The Wild Side” and had some back up singers to do the “do do dos” (you know how that goes) and Reed was just smiling and swaying. I’m glad I got to see that.

Then Reed walked off stage and left immediately and I saw Moby follow and heMoby Moby gave me the thumbs up... was a few feet away so I yelled “Moby!” and he turned around and I told him he did well and he gave me the thumbs up. You know, my opinion counts so much. (Moby pic on right)

Later, we caught Ezra Furman and The Harpoons and every time I see them I like them more and more. I ran into Andrew Langer from The Redwalls there too.

Festivals Remind Me Of How Short I Am: I Kind Of Saw REM

Posted by admin On March - 13 - 2008

Continuing coverage of SXSW from Festival Crashers’ contributing writer Jennie Ellman…

I must say, Andy and Zack were right on the money with what they said about Michael Stipe. I don’t know if I would put him in my top three front-men, but I will say that he was mesmerizing and just plain cool. Not trying to be any conceptualized image like the other two bands before him.

Decked out in a hat, coat, gloves and scarf (while everyone else is in flip flops and a sweatshirt, or at least I was), Stipe enters the stage and exclaims “Children of South By Southwest! Come to me!”. Stipe owns the front-man position with ease as if he is just singing to himself in the mirror and not in the most anticipated event of the night where 80% of the audience is probably in the music industry.

The songs rocked hard and in the best way possible. Stipe just knows how to handle them too. With the hypnotizing drums anREM+2 Festivals Remind Me Of How Short I Am: I Kind Of Saw REMd bass on “Drive” he would wave his hands to “Tick, tock” with only two fingers in the air controlling not only the music but the visuals.

After about three songs Stipe exclaims “Well, this is our lives. We’re sharing this together and that’s pretty good.” Which, yes, may be cheesy, but the perfect feel for a festival. Unlike Van (kind of holding a grudge). With that, Stipe exclaims “We’re doing new stuff and it’s all two and a half minutes long and if you don’t like something take a pee break or get another beer.”
They played “The Great Beyond which was amazing. Stipe said they haven’t practiced that in two years and nobody would have known.REM+3 Festivals Remind Me Of How Short I Am: I Kind Of Saw REM

They also did a new track off of their new album, Accelerate, titled “Houston”. It was written “In response to [Barbara Bush's] comment after Hurricane Katrina.” A little risky to play this critical song in the actual state that the song is written about. But that’s why you have to love REM.
Stipe’s voice has not changed with age just continues to be the driving force of the overall mood of REM’s craft. He fulfills all aspects of a true artist. He provokes thought, comments on society and raises questions on our status as humans. May be too deep for me to be writing, but the true musicianship of this band, which endured time so well, is definitely that I’ll want to see again and again.

Basically, if I don’t hear another note of music in the next three days that I’m here, I’m okay with that. It’s pretty hard to be better than a master. Pictures and article by Jennie

Van Morrison is kind of a schmuck

Posted by admin On March - 13 - 2008
VAN MORRISON
I was looking forward to seeing Van Morrison even before I knew he was going to be at SXSW. My boss, Anthony, and I waited outside for almost two hours. We got in and we were literally in the second standing row. We thought we would be in for a great show.
I wanted him to play at least one of six songs during his performance:
1. “Into the Mystic”
2. “Moondance”
3. “Wild Night”
4. “Domino”
5. “Brown Eyed Girl”
6. “Sweet Thing”

However, I was excited to hear all of his new stuff off of his newest album, Keep It Simple.
Now, I have heard of Morrison’s temper reputation. I have heard that he doesn’t buy into the whole image thing. But I always thought that he is like this because he cares so much about his craft. I can’t say that he does.

He really did not address the audience. He did not smile or seem to enjoy his music. Most of the concert was spent watching Morrison’s back with him either drinking water or directing his band. However, when he sang “There Stands The Glass”, I will say, that when he sang those songs with that signature Van sound, it was the most intimate experience I’ve had with hundreds of people in a long time.

Morrison rarely addressed the audience. He did not thank them for coming out or give any sort of anecdote about the song he was about to sing. He was blatantly frustrated with his band and his anger towards the members was so apparent that he would have stern facial expressions and finger pointings in between songs. Approaching the mic after one of these nonverbal communication outbursts, he yelled “Fuck off” which was probably only the second thing he said into the mic all evening.

Now, it might have been towards a band member or it could have been to an audience member who yelled a request. Either way, Van is no gentleman. But, regardless, after these tantrums, he would start a sweet melodic blues all while seeming to be untainted by his blatant frustration.

About halfway through his concert, and another talk with his band, Morrison’s third comment to the audience was “I’m glad we’re getting somewhere because I have other things to do tonight.” There was no joking in his voice because that might be mistaken for him liking the audience. Van was completely serious in his statement.

Now, I LOVE watching passionate musicians perform. It’s great to see someone do what they love. Van Morrison is not one of these artists.

I’m glad I saw the concert. I’m glad I did not pass up the opportunity to see him in such a personal setting. I’m glad I can tell friends that I saw Van Morrison in concert. But next time I feel like listening to Van Morrison, it would be a more satisfying experience to pop in a greatest hits and light some candles and just call it a day.

And maybe then I can hear at least one of the songs that I had my heart set on.

What a day!

Posted by admin On March - 13 - 2008

An exhausted Jennie Ellman checks in after her first full day at SXSW or, as the PBR drinkers call it, “South By.”

I saw and learned so much in one day that I’m still trying to process it all.

After an hour and a half of sleep at home and then sleeping on and off on the plane, I landed in Austin, met my boss at the airport and off we went to the Convention Center. There we got artist/crew passes and wristbands, which is basically my ticket to get into whatever party Austin is having in the next few days. There, I also met Peter from Peter, Bjorn and John. It was quick but he was nice.

I’m sorry to tell you that mainly for the first half of the day, there was not much music enjoyment. I mean, we’d go to parties that had bands playing, but we’d be talking to people and networking and letting them know about our events that are coming up. It was neat to see publicity in action. So most of what I’ll be talking about at this point, in terms of bands, is what I heard in the background of these discussions.

At the first party, I saw the New Puritans. They struck me as a garage band that was trying to be a little more emo. Not bad, but kind of a different mood than the atmosphere.

Then we went to the Gothamist/Austinist party. There we saw Jukebox The Ghost. They seemed really cool. I kind of wished that I would have had more time to check them out.
After that, we went to the Simply Canadian party. We saw United Steel Workers of Montreal.

I actually found the front man to be witty and their songs to be about unimportant things other than to the band. They wrote a song about a specific woman who worked at their local convenience store. They also wrote about drag racing which the singer even said “This is the best song about drag racing that we’re going to be singing this whole set!” I kind of smirked at that.

With that, we ran to the Fader/Levi’s party. We caught the tail end of The Kills. They really seemed to rock! I was sad that we missed them because I would have wanted to have seen more. We stuck around for a little talking to people and then The Ruby Suns that seemed a little too mellow after The Kills. But we only did stay for almost a full song.

Jennie crashes SXSW

Posted by admin On March - 12 - 2008

Unfortunately, we can’t go to every festival, but lucky for us, the incredibly talented Jennie Ellman will be rocking SXSW and offered to post for us. Andy and I will filter her e-mails for PR propaganda and feed you the rock like we be Steve Nash. I’ll make my comments in bold.-z.t.

So it’s 3:15 in the morning. I’m showered and packed. I have all of my promotional materials, schedules and contact information. I’m ready to go…to sleep. Unfortunately, I have to be up at 5.

Rule #57: Festival crashers don’t sleep. We can’t. We’re too busy having our faces melted.

Do I get the 1.75 hours or do I stay up and catch up on DVR before the inbox gets too full? Inbox too full? That’s what she said. I’d like to sleep on the plane tomorrow (I suggest the tray table) to pass the time, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to with this “nap” that I could be taking now.

So this festival is going to be completely different for me than any other festival I’ve been to before. To start, I’m going to the Music Industry’s Spring Spreak: South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. I’m a publicity intern for an independent record label and I am going as their acting publicist. So, not only will I be seeing as many awesome shows as possible, but I’ll be trying to get journalists to talk to our bands, making sure our bands are at the right place at the right time (our showcase and a Lou Reed Tribute to name a couple) and to basically meet as many people in the business as humanly possible. Oh yeah, I got business cards. We really need business cards, Andy. I don’t think anyone bought the “we left them at home” line.
I’m planning on hitting the ground running. I’m looking forward to seeing REM. I’ve always been a fan but I’ve definitely been even more excited to see them since reading everything that Zack and Andy posted. I’m also going to try and see Van Morrison too. That’d be a dream come true. TRY to see Van Morrison?! You don’t try. You do it.

Recovery

Today has been a day of mostly sleep and being a bum. I’m starting to feel like a normal person again though, which is nice. I do miss the sunshine and warm weather, and find it hard to believe that just yesteKaboom Recoveryrday Zack and I were chilling on the beach.

One thing I am quite excited about is Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are coming through Chicago with the Benevento Russon Duo on Saturday. I’m really excited we get to see Grace again so soon,
and can’t wait to see the show.
I also got excited about a lot of the bands from Langerado today. I obtained the Dynamites album, Kaboom! as well as a bootlegged R.E.M. show from 7-30-1995. It even has the same opener as the Langerado show. -AS
