A wild closing weekend at Jazz Fest

-Sami wraps up from Jazz Fest

The second weekend was a fun one out at Jazzfest. It was rainy Friday and muddy all weekend- but that didn’t stop the crowds from jamming out and eating Crawfish Monica. (Personally, I prefer the Crawfish Enchiladas). We were up and out early on Saturday. We started with Roddie Romero & The Hub City Allstars (Nominated for a Grammy in the new Cajun/Zydeco category) who were rockin’ out cajun style.

We caught some of Stephanie Jordan, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Henry Butler, and The Roots. I decided to take some personal cool-off time in the Jazz tent for Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea- Wow. Such a creative way to do jazz. We ended the day laying out listening to Steel Pulse, which was a great wind-down.

Went home for some much needed R&R, then headed over to the Umphrey’s McGee show at the House of Blues. I will defend Umph to the day I die, they are in my top 5- but this was one of the weakest and shortest sets I’ve ever seen. Thankfully, the encore made up for it. They mixed Nine Inch Nails “Closer” with The Beatles’ “Come Together” and made it one song- coolest thing I’ve ever heard! I regret missing the Friday show more than one will ever know, because I heard it rocked. Next time.

After the show, we headed uptown to see Mike Dillon’s GoGo Jungle (4am show). The band sounded great but it was packed, smoky and stuffy, so I opted to walk home at sunrise. (Of course, I found out later that Mike D. got naked shortly after I left- a Jazzfest tradition for this particular show)

The next few hours were a whirlwind of Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, several Mardi Gras Indian tribes, Santana, The Racantours and The New Orleans Bingo! Show. Racantours were okay- but I really expected a little more out of Jack White (from the distance, it may well have been the White Stripes).

The New Orleans Bingo! Show was awesome- they are a theatrical, experimental jazz band- so fun, check them out. We headed over to the main stage to see the Neville Brothers make their Jazzfest return to close out Sunday. My friend hooked it up with a Press Pass, so I was close enough to see who was on stage. Other than the brothers, and the sons, guests included: Santana, George Porter Jr, Brian Stoltz, Mean Willie Green, etc.

All in all, the crashing was a success (many guest list spots and comp tickets), the food was great, company was awesome, and of course the music was Stellar- as it always is in New Orleans!
