Cheap Trick plays “That 70’s Show” theme song?

I can now put Cheap Trick on my “bands I never thought I’d see” list.*

The lovely Jennie Ellman (our guest writer at SXSW) got us a couple of VIP laminates to a private show at the Hard Rock cafe Wednesday night.

I’ll be honest. For the first 20 minutes, I worried I was watching a band 20 years passed it’s prime. Aging rock stars painfully clinging to their youth with a pony tail or hat to conceal their graying hair. Then they grew on me.

It seemed like everyone was waiting to let loose until they launched into “I Want you to Want me” 20 minutes into their set, changing the dynamic of the crowd.

Guitar Hero needs to borrow a few axes from Rick Nielson’s enviable stash. He trotted out a unique weapon of rock for every song, most notably this sexy five-neck. If Wayne Coyne busting out a double neck is a threesome, this penta-neck was an orgy.

Even after 30 years together, they sound fresh and can still really wail. Especially for being the unofficially 2nd biggest U.S. crossover act in Japan** The set was mostly strong, with the guitar-heavy rock and dual vocals filling the space. Only three or four songs didn’t pique my interest.

Nielson was constantly personable with the small, intimate crowd. At one point he wished his daughter a happy birthday and suggested she buy drinks for the house … not on his credit card. Ah 60 year-old rock stars aren’t as cool as my dad.

They ended the set by playing the theme to That 70’s Show (who knew?) which had Jennie and I wanting to yell “Hello Wisconsin” 25 seconds into it. Next they ended their set with “Surrender” so I looked at Jennie and said…”Didn’t they blow their wad already? What do they have left?” Another surprise: they play a little ditty called “Dream Police.”

All in all it was a surprisingly good, if not perfect show from a classic rock band that still has it. Catch their tour with Journey this summer if you’re feeling nostalgic.

*Other bands on my “Didn’t think I’d ever see list”: Linkin Park, Staind, POD, 311, The Police, Blind Melon, Tool and Iggy Pop.
**Obviously, the most famous U.S. band to cross over into Japan is Jesse and the Rippers
