My kinda town

Zack’s post about all Chicago’s street festivals had me thinking about all the other cheap, great music opportunities that the city has to offer. Take for example, the concert that Zack and I were at this past weekend. For a mere $10 we got to see the Hue and Bumpus at Martyrs. Strange Arrangement also played, but we didn’t make it there in time for their set.

We arrived just as the Hue were taking the stage. Having just seen them kill at their set during Summer Camp the weekend before, we were excited to see how they would follow it up. With some new tunes and other favorites of their EP, the Hue rocked harder than a baby in a treetop.

Bumpus was next up, and lead singer James Johnston thanked the Hue for melting everyones faces. Bumpus usually has the whole crowd dancing and grooving with their mix of soul, funk, pop and rock and Friday evening was no different. The crowd was in for a special treat as Johnston announced that they would be playing their entire album that evening. While I had heard of bands doing this, it was a treat to hear a band play. It was cool to hear a whole set that followed the flow of the album that I am used to.

Fans were excited to hear “Hi-Tek,” which had been eluding their live set. After they were done with All the People, Johnston urged the crowd, which had thinned by the end of the night, to move closer to the stage. This is really when the dance party started. The band absolutely rocked some of their newer tunes, including one song with Ava Fain shining on lead vocals. An encore of NIN’s “Closer” sent the crowd into the night with smiles on their faces. With opportunities for live music like this seemingly around every corner, it is no wonder why Sinatra used to sing that Chicago was his “Kind of Town.”
