Hippies Pissed at Kanye

B.E. Fresh off the Lupe adrenaline boost, we were pumped for a late night Kanye show. We arrived at the main stage at around 2:30am, 15 minutes before he was “scheduled” to go on. At 3:00am the crowd was beginning to get restless and at some point a disgruntled hippie threw a glow stick that damaged one of Kanye’s video screens. Festival organizers posted a video update on the jumbotron that Kanye wouldn’t be taking the stage until 3:15am and then at 3:30am. However, I was not discouraged. Andy had seen the “Glow in the Dark” show recently and talked it up. Maybe it was a big sandwich in addition to the shot of Lupe, but I thought that a show at that time with crazy lights and a big time performer was going to be something to remember. That certainly turned out to be the case; though for the wrong reasons.

At 4:30am we were all finally graced by the Diva’s presence. His set opened with “Good Morning” which, given the time, I actually thought was pretty cool. He also played one of my favorites “Stronger” along with the popular “Jesus Walks” and “Gold Digger”. His set ended rather abruptly which left Andy and I looking at each other very confused. Andy mentioned to me that he left out a bunch of songs that were normally included in the Glow in the Dark show, namely “Touch the Sky”.While the music was pretty good, he made no reference to the fact that it was 4:30am. In fact, he didn’t address the crowd once, not even an apology for being 2 hours late. It seemed as if someone just pressed play on a Kanye video. There was nothing other than the time that made this show special. A Kanye look-a-like could have been out there and nobody would have known the difference.

Now, I’ve heard some rumors that Kanye’s extensive set wasn’t ready on time because Pearl Jam went an hour over their scheduled end time. That being said, I also heard that Kanye refused to go on until Phil Lesh was finished with his act which was scheduled to end at 4am. Believe what you will.Overall, I was very disappointed with this show. Kanye had the template of an epic concert experience handed to him on a gold platter. People undoubtedly were going to talk about Kanye’s 4am show for years to come. Now, instead of marveling at what could have been one of the most unique concert experiences of my life I am left wondering why Kanye would want to piss off all these hippies (“Kanye Sucks” t-shirts were rampant Sunday and Robert Randolph led a “Kanye Sucks” chant). I guess in the end his reputation precedes him and this is just another example of Kanye being Kanye.
