Stevie Wonder Taste of Chicago

~Z.T.~ It’s hard to tell if they came for the food and stayed for Stevie, or came for Stevie and got there early for the food.

Either way, the huge crowds left stuffed as Stevie Wonder played a full two hour and forty-five minute show at the Taste of Chicago Saturday evening.

Unless you wanted to stop eating and wandering several hours before the show, you were going to be quite far from the stage when Stevie took it just after 5:30 p.m. I don’t know what happens in the month between Taste of Chicago and Lollapalooza, but for some reason the audio is infinitely better for Lolla and it was a hindrance.

After Stevie played “Higher Ground,” a song that young me thought was by Red Hot Chili Peppers, I found some. I spent about 20 minutes climbing trees to find a better view with Laura, my Festival Crashing partner for the day.

Discouraged at the poor speaker quality and our inability to find a branch with a view, we wandered for more food, missing half an hour of Stevie to eat shark and a nutella crepe that my mouth is still watering for.

We came back in time to hear almost everything I wanted to hear and everything I didn’t. Though the didn’t list is limited to “I Just Called To Say I Love You” and “My Cherie Amor.”

Somehow we found Jordy and former Festival Crasher guest Jennie, who was dancing up a storm. I learned something from a friend of theirs: Alka Seltzer in beer is not a good headache curer and the foam is absurd.

African American fans seemed to enjoy that Barack Obama has been using Stevie’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” for his campaign song, as there were dozens of Barack shirts worn with pride at the Taste. Far more Barack t-shirts than Stevie shirts.

Just as Jordy said, OK if this next song isn’t “Superstition,” we’re leaving, Wonder boy played it and ended a filling and fulfilling time at the taste.
