Just heard “Enter Sandman” on the radio

Posted by admin On June - 21 - 2008

Hearing "Enter Sandman" in the car just now reminded me of one of the single most rocking moments of my entire life. Not just because of that song, but because before it were the explosions and pyrotechnics and face melting rock of "One."

It also made me think of other such moments in my life. Times where I was left in awe of music that rocks so hard it invokes your primal instinct to bob your head so hard your neck hurts the next day.

One moment that immediately came to mind was an Umphrey's McGee encore of Fugazi's "Waiting Room" and "Pay the Snucka pt. 3." Another was seeing the Who when I was in 5th grade (thanks mom and dad). Anyone else have any complete and total rock moments?

Free Girl Talk

girltalkalbum Free Girl Talk~Z.T.~ Girl Talk’s latest mash masterpiece, Feed the Animals seamlessly throws together 300 + samples in 14 songs. In honor of his style, I attempted to review the album almost exclusively by using titles of songs sampled on the album.

“Damn!” “The Weight” is over. Gregg Gillis’ “Epic” Feed The Animals is “Nasty.” After weeks of hearing “I Don’t Wanna Wait” for it to “Drop,” Gillis “Set if Off” “Last Night.” I’m “Head Over Heels” and “Nothing Compares.”

“Free Your Mind” and “Shake It” to 80′s classics “Jessie’s Girl,” “Footloose,” “Mickey” and “Come on Eileen,” Find “Love in This Club” to 90′s gems “Shoop,” “So What’cha Want,” “Work it” and “Killing Me Softly” and “Pump it Up” to fresh tracks “Umbrella,” “Sweet Escape” “Sexual Eruption” and “ROC Boys.”

girltalkkidz Free Girl Talk“Down In It” at Langerado looking a “Whiter Shade of Pale,” Gillis had casual fans saying “Who The Fuck is That” “Maniac?” before “The Power” had them “Body Movin” yelling “Gimme More” “Sexy Boy,” “I Wanna Rock!”

OK you get the idea. The album wildly surpasses his previous Night Ripper and is a perfect party starter. It’s name that tune for the A.D.D. kid in all of us. Released today, Girl Talk allows you to pay anything for the album from zilch to ten bucks (which will get you a C.D.) Check the full list of samples used here.

Bonnaroo 2008 Discovery: The Arepa

Posted by admin On June - 19 - 2008

-A.S. The first night we were at Bonnaroo Blake, my friend Jordan and I sat around our campsite and discussed how night one at the Roo had gone. Jordan told us that he had eaten several Arepas. Blake and I had no idea what he was talking about. He explained to us that an arepa was some type of cornbread grilled cheese sandwich.

I’ll tell you what I do know it is. Delicious. Blake enjoyed a couple over the course of the weekend and I had one as we walked back to our car after Robert Plant. Jordan explained them as a Bonnaroo phenomenon. After some research, I have discovered that they are from the Andes in South America. All I have to say is thank you Andes, and thank you Jordan for introducing us to this delectable Bonnaroo treat.

Robert Plant and Allison Krauss featuring T Bone Burnett

-A.S. Well, I know we’ve been talking a lot about legends at Bonnaroo 2008. That talk would not be complete without mentioning possibly the biggest legend there, Robert Plant. I enjoyed the Robert Plant and Allison Krauss album, Raising Sand, and I knew not to expect to see Led Zeppelin when we headed over to What Stage for the last time.robert plant alison krauss 002368 1 MainPicture Robert Plant and Allison Krauss featuring T Bone BurnettThey opened with “Rich Woman” and I realized that the set was not going to have much more energy than the album, which I often put on when relaxing. Plant and Krauss sounded great together though, as did the Raising Sand Review featuring T Bone Burnett.

One of the most shocking moments of the weekend came from hearing the opening riff to “Black Dog.” Except it wasn’t the rocking riff that causes you to crank the volume. It came with a country twang and was weird to hear a folk/country cover of one of the greatest rock songs. It wasn’t bad, just not enough to get you going. Musical blue balls if you will.plant krauss 01 x600 Robert Plant and Allison Krauss featuring T Bone BurnettBlake and I stayed to hear a few more tunes, but after a while the prospect of air conditioning in the car and beds at the end of our journey beckoned to us. It was time to head home and conclude our Bonnaroo 2008 experience.

Solomon Burke

Posted by admin On June - 17 - 2008

-A.S. I know we’ve talked a bit about rock legends throughout our coverage this weekend, but Solomon Burke took his legendary status to a new level this weekend. At least in the eyes of the Festival Crashers. Blake and I walked up to see Burke commanding the show from a throne in the center of the stage.

As fans shouted out requests, Burke told them to keep them coming because that was their show. One such request was “Diamonds On Your Mind,” a Tom Waits cover. After that tune Burke ordered his band members to take off their jackets and loosen their ties, since they would be there a while.burke 291 Solomon BurkeI often joke about my being Jewish and loving soul music. This was as true as ever as the Burke ruled over the crowd from his throne during “Soul Stirring.” As he finished the song the back up singers toweled Burke off.

Burke told the audience that he had made a promise to many of his friends that he had the opportunity to record that had since passed. He said he had promised to perform as long as he was able. He mentioned the names of Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, James Brown, Bo Diddley and many others.SolomonBurke W Solomon BurkeAfter that dedication, Burke did a beautiful cover of “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” As the whole crowd sang along to “Mustand Sally,” Burke decided he needed dancers and demanded that some girls should break on through and come up to the stage to dance. Burke was better than expected, and I enjoyed every last bit of the Hall of Famers show.

jackie green Phil Lesh, Larry Campbell, Jackie Greene and Teresa Williams acoustic performance-A.S. We walked up to This Tent just as this acoustic foursome was finishing tuning and sound checking. After a quick hello, the very familiar opening of “Friend of the Devil” sent cheers through the crowd. I had heard Jackie Greene singing for Phil & Friends at Langerado, and briefly the night before as we walked past their late night set, but I think I enjoyed his voice most during this set. It fit well with the acoustic instruments. Or maybe I just really enjoy me an acoustic day set. I mean, who doesn’t?

Phil Lesh wished the crowd a good morning at about 5:00 pm, no doubt referring to the fact that they had just played from 12:00-4:00 am the night before. “Deal” had the Deadhead in all of us singing along. After hearing “Deep Ellem Blues” for the second time that weekend (Levon Helm did it the day before), Blake and I decided it was time to go check out Solomon Burke.

Yonder Mountain String Band

artist 9751 Yonder Mountain String Band-A.S. YMSB had a day set on the main stage, and Blake and I headed over to check it out. There was a decent crowd for the afternoon set, and we grabbed a seat on the grass. There was a lot of people dancing and enjoying their bluegrass noodling, and the band certainly appreciated it. Jeff Austin dedicated a song to all the people “stomping in left field.” It was pretty hot in the sun, and eventually Blake and I decided to move on to the next stage.

Robert Randolph’s Revival

Posted by admin On June - 17 - 2008

-A.S. After packing all of our stuff up and positioning our car for a quick exit, it was time to head into the festival grounds for the last time. We could hear Yonder already on the main stage, but I told Blake I wanted to at least catch the end of Robert Randolph. That is really all that we saw.
Robert Randolphs RevivalI can’t even tell you what song they played, but we heard the last part of the jam. We did, however, hear Randolph playing towards the crowds anger towards Kanye West. Randolph said, “people pay a lot of money to be entertained here, and there’s no reason for that,” before starting chants of “Kanye sucks!”

Hippies Pissed at Kanye

Posted by admin On June - 16 - 2008

B.E. Fresh off the Lupe adrenaline boost, we were pumped for a late night Kanye show. We arrived at the main stage at around 2:30am, 15 minutes before he was “scheduled” to go on. At 3:00am the crowd was beginning to get restless and at some point a disgruntled hippie threw a glow stick that damaged one of Kanye’s video screens. 21321734 21321735 slarge Hippies Pissed at KanyeFestival organizers posted a video update on the jumbotron that Kanye wouldn’t be taking the stage until 3:15am and then at 3:30am. However, I was not discouraged. Andy had seen the “Glow in the Dark” show recently and talked it up. Maybe it was a big sandwich in addition to the shot of Lupe, but I thought that a show at that time with crazy lights and a big time performer was going to be something to remember. That certainly turned out to be the case; though for the wrong reasons.

At 4:30am we were all finally graced by the Diva’s presence. His set opened with “Good Morning” which, given the time, I actually thought was pretty cool. He also played one of my favorites “Stronger” along with the popular “Jesus Walks” and “Gold Digger”. His set ended rather abruptly which left Andy and I looking at each other very confused. Andy mentioned to me that he left out a bunch of songs that were normally included in the Glow in the Dark show, namely “Touch the Sky”.37972910 Hippies Pissed at KanyeWhile the music was pretty good, he made no reference to the fact that it was 4:30am. In fact, he didn’t address the crowd once, not even an apology for being 2 hours late. It seemed as if someone just pressed play on a Kanye video. There was nothing other than the time that made this show special. A Kanye look-a-like could have been out there and nobody would have known the difference.

Now, I’ve heard some rumors that Kanye’s extensive set wasn’t ready on time because Pearl Jam went an hour over their scheduled end time. That being said, I also heard that Kanye refused to go on until Phil Lesh was finished with his act which was scheduled to end at 4am. Believe what you will.kanyebook2xc7 Hippies Pissed at KanyeOverall, I was very disappointed with this show. Kanye had the template of an epic concert experience handed to him on a gold platter. People undoubtedly were going to talk about Kanye’s 4am show for years to come. Now, instead of marveling at what could have been one of the most unique concert experiences of my life I am left wondering why Kanye would want to piss off all these hippies (“Kanye Sucks” t-shirts were rampant Sunday and Robert Randolph led a “Kanye Sucks” chant). I guess in the end his reputation precedes him and this is just another example of Kanye being Kanye.

Lupe Fiasco was loved by Bonnaroo, and he loved them back

Posted by admin On June - 16 - 2008

-A.S. I knew going into Lupe Fiasco’s late night set at Bonnaroo that Blake was not a big hip hop fan. He asked me why I liked Lupe so much, and I told him about all his great lyrics, the musicality of his beats and how good his flow was. I also tried to tell him how much better of a performer he was than Kanye. If only we knew how true that was going to turn out to be.lupe460 Lupe Fiasco was loved by Bonnaroo, and he loved them backLupe can dance, he can work a crowd and he even played some mic stand guitar during “The Instrumental.” After a killer “Hip Hop Saved My Life,” the entire crowed was shouting Lupe! Lupe! Fiasco, who was clearly having a great time, started cheering audience! audience! During “Kick Push” he had the whole crowd singing along to the skateboarding anthem.

The crowd ate up everything Lupe Fiasco offered up. “Daydreamin,’” which was recently featured on an ATT commercial, went over really well. To close the set out, Matthew Santos came out for “Superstar.”

Leaving, Blake and I felt re energized. Lupe had been the very shot in the arm that we needed.
