Sean Kuti and the Egypt 80s at the House of Blues

Festival Crashers welcomes Jordan Lipshutz to the mix for this review.

On Monday night, Seun Kuti (son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti) played a movin’ and groovin’ hour and 45 minute set at the House of Blues. My friend Paul and I had a incredible dinner downstairs consisting of “Voodoo shrimp in Dixie beer reduction” and Shrimp Po’ Boys. We discovered that if you eat at the House of Blues restaurant you get to jump the line to get into the music hall. WHO KNEW? We headed upstairs and grabbed some seats while the rest of the crowd filed in.As lights went down, members of the Egypt 80 (Fela’s original backing band) appeared one by one and began playing. I knew this show was going to be great when the bassist came on stage with a white stripe painted across his face. The Egypt 80 proved they know a thing or two about afrobeat by opening with “Don’t Give That Shit To Me,” a song off Seun’s new album, Many Things. Seun then came onstage sporting tight charcoal bell-bottoms and a silk leopard print shirt. Seun started with a song by his late father called “Gba Mi Leti Ki N’Dolowo (Slap Me Make I Get Money).” This song really set the tone for the evening. It was very fast paced and everyone was moving. They then moved into more songs off the new album.

At one point, a man from the audience emptied a bag of about 75 singles onto the stage. Seun saw the pile of cash, chuckled and said “There are no strippers here, my friend,” kicking the singles off the stage. They closed with “Fire Dance” from the new album. Seun engaged the audience and asked for us to help him chant. Then his back-up singers showed us their assets by shaking every part of their bodies rapidly to the music. Unbelievable.
Between the instrumentation, the energy, the showmanship and the rhythms of the night, Seun Kuti and the Egypt 80 may have put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. If you want to hear some real funk and get your body moving, do yourself a favor and see Seun or any other member of the Kuti family.
