Less Than Jake, More Than Expected

~Z.T.~Within two minutes of walking into the House of Blues, I wanted to leave. Normally I’m game for pretty much any concert, but I didn’t know one Less Than Jake song and was eager to start preparing for Rothbury. Plus, they were really pushing my buttons by pulling the “praise the hell out of the city we’re currently in” card. (One of my big concert pet peeves.) They even tried to get credit for knowing the “s” is silent in Illinois.

After sucking up, Less Than Jake revealed themselves as a funny, confident band who knew how to rile their fans up to a whilrl whind after more than 15 years of performing.

Five songs in, I crashed the private balcony closest to the stage with the help of my good-looking photographer. From that point on, my eyes were transfixed on the wild spectacle below. Thrashing about wildly, the audience was in a constant moshing frenzy as seemingly everyone in the general admission crowd surfed over their heads.

I didn’t know the music, but that’s never stopped me from enjoying a new band. The ska was fairly catchy, all members could sing and harmonize, the bassist tore it up and the guitarist was a little weak, but I’m a sucker for horns.

Their music held its own, but Less Than Jake pulled out tricks to keep the show entertaining. Bringing random seven and 12 year-old kids on-stage to dance with girls, holding a beer chugging contest between the saxophonist and a guest and having the crowd yell “Fuck you, Asshole!” to a friend who never visited them the month a half they were in the studio in Chicago.

The hour and a half flew by as the Shmo-hawk ridden crowd kept me wildly entertained and the five piece (guitar-bass-sax-trombone-drum) band played a fun, lively set of third wave ska (There are two other waves?)

Photos by Rhea Coffern, who overcame disgusting drunk guys constantly hitting on her while she took these lovely photos from the balcony.
