Keller, 311 and Modest Modest Mouse at Rothbury

~Z.T.~ I wish Keller still looped exclusively, but I’m glad I finally got to see him. He’s one of those artists I heard a lot growing up, because it was always coming from my sister’s room. His acoustic guitar plucking sounded well in the early evening as I laid in the grass and nodded off. Highlight was a slowed down, soulful cover of the Butthole Surfers’ “Pepper.”

311 (Nick Hexum pictured at right) had a large following at their stage, but somehow I could walk all the way to the front row along the right side ten minutes into their set. I loved the funky alternative band when i was in 6th grade and now I can’t tell if I like them or not. I kept alternating between really digging them and finding them off-putting. The drum-off and “Amber” 40 minutes was enough.

Moved over to Modest Mouse with Gabe. They sounded much better than the cluttered mess at the United Center last month. “Fire it Up” and “Dashboard” sounded as crisp as we felt, taking a beating from the sun. Currently hearing “Float On” from the media tent.

Andy and I are a little roughed up from a long day, but we’ve got plenty more music to see. Hope you’re out getting rowdy. Happy 4th all.
