Dave Matthews Band owned Rothbury

-A.S. Earlier today I told Zack that I wanted to hear “Seek Up,” which is probably my favorite Dave Matthews Band song. Sure enough, Dave opened up with it as I was gearing up to take some pictures in the photo pit. I also had the best seat in the house in the pit for “Grey Street.” Jeff Coffin shined during his solo, and left everyone amazed that he had only been playing with the band for about a week.Matthews was sure to smile for his huge crowd.

After grabbing some water and a quick pretzel, I found Zack at our meeting spot. We were seated on the grass until Dave introduced a song as “a fun song” and dropped into Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.” That had us up on our feet and swinging along to the beat. As if that wasn’t enough, Dave and the band exploded into “Tripping Billies.”Boyd Tinsley was feeling this solo.

I had been really enjoying this line up of the Dave Matthews Band so far, and the following songs only strengthened that. I was never really a fan of Butch Taylor on keys, but I am a huge Jeff Coffin fan. Not to mention the fact that Tim Reynolds wails on guitar. This was ever so apparent on “Too Much,” which has never rocked as hard as it did with Reynolds on lead guitar.DMB drew a bigger crowd than Widespread Panic did the night before.

To close out the set, Carter Beauford started the familiar intro of the fan favorite “Ants Marching.” As if not to be outdone by Widespread’s encore of “Life During Wartime,” Dave encored with three songs. “Gravedigger” led things off and was followed by “Louisiana Bayou.” Both were solid, but didn’t hold a candle to the Sly & the Family Stone cover of “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” Though Zack and I had split during the encore, we managed to find each other on the other side of the venue and dance to the funky close of potentially the best show of Rothbury 2008.
