The Soul Stew Revival brought their brand of soulful blues rock to Rothbury.

-A.S. One of the highlights from 10k lakes last summer for me was the Derek Trucks Band. Eric Blumenfeld (of Kinetix) and I were both blown away by their late night set. Our newest crasher, Jordan, had told me that this line up was Derek Trucks Band, but with Trucks’ wife Susan Teshchi and younger brother Duane manning the second drum kit and a horns section. Knowing that, Soul Stew Revival was one of my most anticipated shows of Rothbury.
Top two guitarist of Rothbury so far, along with Jimmy Herring.

They opened with an incredible cover of the Band’s “Don’t Do It.” I have loved that song ever since the first time I listened to Rock of Ages, and Soul Stew Revival sure did it justice. Just a few songs into the set, Susan Tedeschi invited Col. Bruce Hampton up to the stage for Bobby Bland’s “Cry, Cry, Cry.” Tedeschi and Hampton traded versus as Jordan told me that Hamton had also come out with Medeski, Martin and Wood.Tedeschi channeled her inner Paul McCartney for “Hey Jude.”

I know that Zack is usually turned off by Beatle’s covers, but the Soul Stew Revival did a mean “Hey Jude.” With Tedeschi ripping up the vocal part at the end and Trucks finishing off matters with a monster solo, I knew that it was one Beatles cover that Zack would be able to swallow. Soon after that, it was time to head back to the media tent to get escorted into the photo pit for Dave Matthews Band.
