Of Montreal’s theatrics

~Z.T.~ It’s a shame Andy doesn’t like these guys, because it was a visual feast, as always, from Of Montreal. They were decked out in the best outfits of the festival. It was like pick a Beatles era to dress like day. One had a black Sgt. Pepper esque band uniform. One had a spiritual India era Beatles frock and lead singer Kevin Barnes looked like … a Beatles girlfriend.

As Kyle Gass later told me, he looked “Flamboyant, but compelling.”

Starting with the first two tracks off their latest album “Suffer For Fashion” and “Sink the Seine,” the indie-rock band had even better costumes for non-members. A man in a silver mask, black body suit, and robe came out and lifted his robe to reveal four small children also in masks who chased Barnes around the stage creepily as he sang.

It was a fun, dancey set filled with personal favorites like “She’s a Rejector” enhanced by a man jumping around in a tie to help project the frustration in the lyrics.

It was my third time seeing them in the last 8 months and it’s been wildly different every time, but always wild and fierce.
