The Black Keys are the next White Stripes

~Z.T.~ It’s an easy comparison to make. It’s been made for years. But a blistering performance in the hot sun from guitar-drum duo The Black Keys made it clear to me that if Jack White and Meg never perform together again, I could be satisfied that the Black Keys could take over the genre from The White Stripes … OK that’s not true, but the Black Keys put on a thunderous performance at Rothbury.

Dan Auerbach asked the crowd for “The world’s most peaceful mosh pit.” There wasn’t any moshing, but quite a bit of foot-tapping, head-banging madness.Digging in with “Girl is On My Mind” they roared through a number of songs off their recent release Attack and Release and mixed in a Captain Beefheart cover.

As Andy took pictures I got down in the second row with my fist pumping. My ears are still ringing from the thumping “Strange Times” filled with heavy riffs and a power stroke finish. The bluesy rock duo was at its finest for “Your Touch,” and closed their hour-long set with my favorite song off the new album, “I Got Mine.”
I can’t tell if my face feels like it’s going to melt off because of the sun or from the Black Keys, but I’m a happy man.

It’s off to Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeshi before Dave and STS9. I’m charging my phone so I can twitter your brains out all night. But go enjoy your Saturday night. Love.

  1. Sandy Said,

They are absolutely amazing, way better than The White Stripes.
