John Mayer a little early at Mile High

-A.S. Denver, CO
As Matt and I walked over to the main stage, we could already hear John Mayer playing “Bigger Than My Body”. This was confusing to us because he was not supposed to take the stage for another 30 minutes. I got to the media tent to get an escort to the photo pit, and they didn’t know why he was on early either. When we got into the pit they said that it was the end of the third song and we couldn’t take pictures.John and I have this connection where he always manages to find me in the pit when he solos.

A crowd of angry photographers gathered on the side of the stage as the festival organizers and security scrambled to figure things out. During Mayer’s cover of “Crossroads” it was settled that we could go in for three songs.

During “Waiting For the World to Change” someone spilled into the photo pit after crowd surfing. After the song Mayer asked the crowd if they actually liked crowd surfing.

“It’s like you’re left with the option of either putting your hands up and helping your fellow man or letting him fall on his face. I prefer boob flashing.”Rocking out hard enough to make people crowd surf at a John Mayer show.

After playing “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” Mayer also added that a musician can never ask for boobs, merely suggest it. Mayer’s set also included “Stitched Up,” which he wrote with Herbie Hancock. It grew on me the second time hearing it live without Herbie, but still isn’t as good.Hey Johnny are you goofin’ on Elvis? Hey baby, are you having fun?

I had to head across the festival to go shoot the Black Crowes, so I walked away as Mayer was playing “Why Georgia.”

-M.S. John Mayer closed up his set, or so we thought, with his newest popular song, “Say,” which had the entire crowd singing along. Come to think of it, the crowd sang along to a good percentage of his songs. If there was an award for funniest playing faces, this guy would have to be the front runner.

He left the stage, only to come back out to enormous cheers for an encore. Mayer informed the crowd that he had left because he hadn’t felt loved, but since they cheered so much he would play an encore as long as the entire set.

He started the encore with an incredibly bluesy cover of Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctor.” He also sang “Vultures” and followed that up with my personal favorite live song “Gravity.” He finished up the encore set with another cover, Van Halen’s “Panama.” He played shirtless, using a guitar that had a design that mimicked the album cover for Van Halen’s Best of Both Worlds.
