Hippie’s don’t just dance at Slightly Stoopid

I was less than impressed with Slightly Stoopid, and felt just that for going to see them. Their bass was way too heavy and the horn section, which should have been a saving grace, was not great. Eric was right. It just sounds like they’re trying way too hard to be Sublime.
I have always been curious about hippies who bring toys and other things to dance with to a summer music festival. Are you on so many drugs that just dancing won’t suffice? If I had a hula hoop, I wouldn’t be able to even pay attention to the music. What about you girl spinning balls attached to string? Is Slightly Stoopid that lame that you can only get through it by doing cool twirling tricks with those balls?
The devil sticks may still be my personal favorite festival toy, but I saw some pretty cool hula hooping and ball twirling at 10k. Watching the hippies play at least made Slightly Stoopid go by faster. Especially since the button I requested that would skip them and Flaming Lips just so I could see Kinetix apparently doesn’t exist.

  1. nick Said,

your a douche and should keep your comments to yourself, slightly is one of the best touring bands in the world. They’be been around for 15 years or so and have played in just about every city in the country. Just because you have no appreciation for good soulful and dedicated music doesnt mean you should knock down a good honest band. And your knockin down hippies? Music drives souls and spirituality, not just drugs, some hippies dont do drugs. Slightly isnt a sublime wannabe band, they were signed to skunk records (sublimes label) back in the day and toured with them. Brad had a lot of appreciation for slightly and thought they would be bigger then sublime was. So basically what im saying is, fu(k off and go listen to “your” music and we’ll keep listenin to “real” music. thanks

  3. Shore Said,

Don’t you get it Zack? You didn’t have cool toys. That’s why you didn’t like it, because Slightly St00pid has SOUL Zack, SOUL.

Nick, do yourself a favor and read up on Festival Crashers before you make a comment about what “our” music might be. You might even learn a thing or two about some “real” music. You can thank us later.

  4. Teibs Said,

For the record, the comment I deleted was my own comment being posted twice. i would not censor the all mighty knowledgeable nick.

I think he might have been the dude who told Eric he liked Kinetix, but they were “too country.” I still don’t know what he meant by that.

  5. forrest Said,

I agree with Nick, you are a duche bag. You need to do us all a favor and First, go out and buy a slightly Stoopid CD, then dig back into the only non-shitty part of your CD collection and pull out a Sublime CD and listen to them back to back. You will notice something, they are from the same fucking state, their music is going to sound simmilar. Then come back to your bull shit blog page thing you have going on here and take back your dip shit ignorant comment. Slightly Stoopid is a “jam band” they go out on a limb every show to do something improvisational (sorry for the big word there dictionary.com should be able to help) every show. So what if you happend to catch one not so great one, you don’t judge and down a great band and their loyal fans just because you perfer something else, shit, pretend like they don’t even exist so you don’t turn anybody else off to great music.

  6. Teibs Said,

at least nick and i can spell douche bag, douche bag. i would never buy a slightly stoopid cd. i downloaded chronichitis so i’d be more familiar with them and guess what? It blew nuts. Though you’re right- we don’t like any jam bands. Ya did your research well on that one. Also, what is this improvisational word you came up with. I never heard of it in my four years at the IU J school. Slightly Stoopid is almost as bad as their name and you are almost as dumb as yours.

  7. Teibs Said,

oh, also, the argument that just because S.S and sublime are from the same state makes them sound the same is insanely preposterous. I can’t even wrap my head around that one.

  8. Shore Said,

Thanks Nick and Forrest for making for some great blogging conversation. Do us all a favor and refrain from swearing, misspelling and sounding ignorant. Festival Crashers welcomes all commentary, both negative and positive.

Like I said above, read the blog and see what kind of music we’ve talked about on here. It expands all genres, and you may be surprised what nice things we’ve had to say about all sorts of bands.

Zack and I were both educated at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. One of the best in the world. Don’t try and learn me a new word, when you can barely put together a coherent thought.

  9. Matthew Said,

I’m not a fan of Slightly Stoopid, and I also agree they sound like they are trying very hard to sound like Sublime.

Also, just because they are a jamband and improvise doesn’t mean they are good at it. I find their jams to be stagnant, stale, boring and do not fill the necessary void of exploratory music. In fact, they sound like a band thats run out of ideas and finding new ways to furhter push their musical limits.

I like jambands/improvisational music, and I also listen to a lot of other generes. Bottom line is this band doesn’t do it for me and apparenlty others.

Just because you like them and we don’t or visa versa, does not give you the right to state what is “real music” and what isn’t.

Please read the blog and check out all the great bands and various genres this blog has reviewed and come across.

  10. Rob Said,

I think it is much more baffling that you think Coldplay is good in concert.

    Love,
    Rob

    P.S. Hippies smell bad.

  11. Teibs Said,

thanks, original festival crasher. rob taught me almost everything i know about crashing festivals. though im sure coldplay would be awesome and im not gay for saying that. many hippies do smell, rob.

  12. Shore Said,

Haha. I never meant for that post to turn into hating on hippies. In fact, I was saying that it was the only thing that entertained me during that show. Some of the hooping/ball twirling skills were quite impressive. Yes hippies sometimes do smell, but so do Zack and I from time to time.

As for Coldplay: Sure they’re not a jam band. Nor do they do extensive, if any, soloing during their show. There is something about getting caught up in a show were 50 or 60 thousand people are singing along to every word. That gives music a special energy. Plus Chris Martin is an engaging front man. I wouldn’t put him at the top, but he’s up there.

  13. Rob Said,

I saw them at Deer Creek just after X&Y came out when my friend won some free tickets in a radio contest and I still felt like I got ripped off. They did one 90 minute set, they played their biggest hits exactly like they are on the album and I think we were the only ones at the concert who weren't dropped off by their parents. Frankly I thought seeing them live was barely a sliver more interesting than putting their cds in a 5 disc changer on random and staring at a blacklight poster with your younger brother and his friends.

Also, I think you guys are douche bags but for entirely different reasons.

  14. Teibs Said,

do you think we’re douchebags b/c you’re jealous that you don’t go to festivals anymore? and b/c i call you birdman? is that what you’re tweeting about? birdy.

  17. Shore Said,

I don’t know about you Sam, but I much more prefer Martin’s better half, Gwyneth Paltrow.

  21. Jeff Said,

WOW…. Please change your career immediately before you embarrass yourself anymore. If you really haven’t looked into a band than don’t write a review about them. The first time I saw SS I wasn’t too impressed. But, I didn’t go bitch about it on my website. And now they’re one of my favorite bands. The first thing you have to learn about writing a music review is that you should probably do some actual research on the band. Almost everything you stated in your review was false. What is this… fucking amateur hour??

  22. Greg A. Said,

Wow! Reading those comments was both entertaining & surprising. Jeff, I agree, this was not FC’s best post, but your criticism was a bit harsh. I know Zack personally. He’s a nice guy. A music blog is PRIMARILY opinion. We’re all here because we love music. At least that is what I believe. Y’all should respect the power of the published word and RESPECT one another.
    Peace,
    Greg

p.s. Thx to Matthew for contributing a positive comment :)
