~Z.T.~ NEW UPDATED LIST 12:18 a.m. 7/30/08
When you start thinking about this category, the first thing you’ll realize is that the best bands are from England. (Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Oasis (just kidding) OK so my rock professors would consistently say The Beach Boys and Weiler just name dropped The Eagles. Thanks, but no thanks.

Steely Dan, and The Allman Brothers should be higher on your list….so should the eagles.

I sense a lot of animosity in this post…Take it Easy

  3. Matthew Said,

Traffic is actually English…my bust friends

  4. Teibs Said,

i knew i could count on your kappel. these really aren’t in a perfect order. the talking heads are #1. that’s all i know.

  5. Rob Said,

Uh… Hendrix? Band of Gypsies or Experience, take your pick. Seriously though someone must have been drunk when they made that list.

  6. Rob Said,

    Also forgotten:

    The Velvet Underground
    Zappa and the Mothers
    Buddy Holly
Elvis (I don’t actually care for him much but he is certainly important)

less important but could use some love:
    Tower of Power
    Gov’t Mule
    Guns N’ Roses
    REM
and Kid Rock for his poetic lyrics and heartfelt songwriting

  7. Rob Said,

Also, Aerosmith is weak. Like weakest of the weak.

  8. Rob Said,

Oh, Iggy and the Stooges, Fugazi, Sleater Kinney, Sonic Youth… I think I am going to do a blog about “the best American bands that Zack shockingly left off his list but managed to include Metallica, The Beach Boys, Steely Dan and freaking Aerosmith.”

  9. Teibs Said,

I’m glad you’re having so much fun, Rob. I’ll put together a new, more complete list. that was just a jumping off point.

  10. Blake Said,

Ok first, stop hating on Metallica. I mean theyre only the biggest metal band ever, no big deal. Second, the eagles ranking is ridiculous. They shouldn’t even be on the list. Overall, good list though i believe Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble and Lenyard Skynard should be included.

  11. hacocacyb Said,

Metallica is NOT a rock band. SRV & DT is blues.

You should've paid attention in school!

  12. Steve Said,

As far as rock history goes, and who has contributed the most to the legacy of rock, I see a couple problems:

    1) I LOVE the talking heads, but Dylan and Hendrix were way more important. No one tops Dylan at writing a song with lyrics, and no one tops Hendrix at playing a song without lyrics.

    2) Nirvana should definitely be higher. Again, I love Phish, but the grunge thing was a huge American contribution to rock.

Thats all i saw for now, may post more.

  13. Bobo Said,

    1. The Band (i mean, they are called THE band. Duh)
    2. The Beach Boys (If only for Pet Sounds alone — Best American Album?)
    3. CSNY — Ultimate American supergroup
    4. Bruce & The E Street
    5. Band of Gypsys (The Experience was 2/3 British, no? And Gypsys never touched the Experience stuff)
    6. Nirvana (influence)
    7. Grateful Dead (influence again)
    8. Tom Petty & HBs
    9. Buddy Holly & The Crickets
    10. Zappa or Doors or Talking Heads

  14. Teibs Said,

I love that you made your own ten bobo. This almost makes me forgive you for taking my cell phone at camp five years ago. Kappel’s been giving me shit that the band is partly canadian. Oh well. I know i overrated the talking heads, i just love them so much more than the others.

  15. Sami Said,

Not that they are at the top of a list, but how has no one mentioned the Rolling Stones? There is something to be said about their continued success, and consistently having one of the highest grossing tours in the world.
(I realize this borders rock and pop…)
Also, What about The Beatles, Blind Faith, and The Police…?

Posted on July 30th, 2008 at 9:52 am

  16. Sami Said,

okay, I totally missed the “American part”
    Still, they need a mention

  17. hacocacyb Said,

    HAHAHHAHAHA

Sami, you should’ve made that comment anonymous for job purposes!

  18. Hodgkinson, R Said,

why is phish on this list?? arn’t they a Jam band? do people “rock out” at their shows? NO, they “jam out”.

Posted on July 30th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

  19. Teibs Said,

ooooh welcome to the discussion hodgey. they rock. jam bands count.

  20. Hilary Said,

Posted on July 30th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

  21. Teibs Said,

They’re BRITISH! c’mon friends, we’re looking for an AMERICAN BAND. Glad you’re still reading Hil :-)

  22. Shore Said,

I have to agree almost 100% with Bobo. Except that the Doors would probably be higher, and Zappa wouldn’t be that high on my list. That might ruffle some feathers around here. I’d also put RHCP higher than most of the lists that have been on here. As well as Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Foo Fighters.

Posted on July 30th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

  23. Teibs Said,

i always thought i should like the doors. i say i do. i don’t really that much. i like a little beach boys and i respect what they were doing, but i never choose to put on anything except pet sounds. if you could put all of zappa’s music into “mothers” category I’d have him top 3. but ya cant.
