~Z.T.~ I blew the 24 hour rule right out of the water. For those unfamiliar, Andy and I never listen to the band we’re seeing 24 hours prior to the show. I was listening to John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band on my ipod at work this morning, when Jennie told me Ezra Furman and the Harpoons were playing that very album tonight at Schubas.
I listened to the album eight more times all the way through, but kept getting drawn into the 1:07 mark of track two, “Hold On,” when we’re treated to what is seemingly a guest spot from the Cookie Monster.
The rest of the track is a touching, hopeful song about John and Yoko and the reference to Cookie Monster, quite possibly my favorite television character of all time, made this an instant classic for me. I must have played that one part close to 75 times today. Cookie Monster fans, check 1:07.
I was pretty sure this album pre-dated Sesame Street and was hopeful that the character of Cookie Monster was based on this track. I looked up the dates and Sesame Street dropped knowledge for the first time in November ’69 and John gave us Plastic Ono Band in December of ’70. Turns out John just got into Sesame way early. Oh, John.
