Part two of Zack’s interview with Girl Talk:
ZT:How wild is a Girl Talk show?
GT: I’ve seen people having sex on stage. Doing legitimate drugs on stage. Last fall was the first time someone had sex at a show that I saw.
When the stage gets this packed, it’s easy to not notice dancers going at it. Gregg said he’s seen it happen at least four or five shows this year. “The girl straddling the guy, skirt up. It’s as discreet as it can be.” (note to self… Get. On. Stage. At. Girl Talk.)
Misconception: It’s the same thing live as the album…
GT: When you hear “No Diggity with “Flashing Lights,” the presentation will be different. You might hear the a capella for a second and then the music kicks in. The verse from “No Diggity” will be one loop, the chorus will be another. As you hear one part start and another it’s me triggering it in real time. Live sound processing.
GT: I come up with sets. It’s all live, but I don’t want it to be improvisation. People like the arrangements. Everything I do at home is working for the live show.ZT: We’re Festival Crashers. I gotta ask…Festivals?
GT: For me it’s like, I love doing the festivals. I had never done one prior to last summer. What I do is catered to a small club or a basement. Was a little worried how It’d translate. Festival crowd is there to socialize and have a good time. Very nice to let loose. I really like it.
GT (Going in the crowd): I wish I could in the crowd the whole time. I kind of have segments in my head that I’m looking for. If I leave the computer, certain parts will loop over and over. I know parts that won’t get annoying. I don’t go in the crowd in isolated spots.
“Give up my day job to become a heart throb“-The Who
GT: Last June I gave up day job. I feel like I really don’t have a job. Somehow I’m getting paid for it. I thought when I quit I’d have so much free time, but it hasn’t been lounging by the pool or anything like that. Now I can focus an entire day to music. It’s been the most productive year of my life in terms of music.
