ACL Preview #2 Robert Plant vs. Beck

Posted by admin On September - 17 - 2008

~Z.T.~ There are a number of pressing decisions on what shows to see at ACL. I think I’ve made up my mind on this one … but I always spaz out when I’m actually there.

I have to see Robert Plant. Seeing John Paul Jones at Bonnaroo ’07 was a dream come true. Even though his voice has taken a beating over the years and he’s not playing much Zeppelin, it’s Plant. It’s Plant. (In Tom Crean “It’s Indiana” voice)

I’ve seen Beck three times (Jamboree ’98, Bonnaroo ’06 and Fall ’06 in Chicago.) Also, he’ll be here for two nights in October. This debate is getting easier by the minute. But while we’re on the subject, I’m sick of this “Oh, I’ve seen them. I don’t need to see them again” argument. I love twix. I had twix last week. That’s not stopping me from getting more twix. I was obsessed with Beck in jr. high and never really stopped. I haven’t heard the new album live…Look at this punim! I gotta catch at least half hour of my first favorite artist. Also, what a crime leaving him off the man-crush team. Shame on me.

Shore has made his decision to see Beck. That’s gonna be trouble for me. Generally, at festivals where I don’t know anyone, I stick by him. Especially at night. I mean, if you know me, you know I’m not too good wandering alone after dark. But with the half-hour overlap, I think I’m just going to start at Plant and Krauss and stay until I hear one Zeppelin song and then move on to my boy Beck.

UPDATE: I’m staying for most if not all of Robert Plant and Allison Krause.

What would you do?

Beckkkk. hands down. The last time I saw them I wasn’t super impressed, so Im ready for a blow out performance. And the newest album is way better than the Information

  2. Matthew Said,

this shouldn’t even be up for debate, in my opinion. just cause you had twix last week and want it again this week, thats your argument?

robert plant is a living legend, playing with one of the most talented musicians of her kind. the album is absolutely stunning, and performance reviews have been off the wall positive for their tour. did i mention it’s robert plant? not to say beck isn’t good, beck is great. yes, plant isn’t playing LZ, but he’s still singing and playing music he wrote with krauss. isn’t that awesome? the idea of an artist pushing his boundaries into areas he normally doesn’t, and you get to witness it live, i mean it’s a moment in history in terms of your concert going career. he may never do a tour like this again. while beck on the other hand will be in chicago twice and on top of it continue to push out funky folk albums with many similar sounds and progressions for years to come. plant may not have years to come in general, let alone release new music. there is no LZ reunion, go see a living legend.

    did i mention it’s robert f*ckin plant?

if anything split your time…but dont skip plant, cause you may never see it again. you’ll more likely look back and be happier you got to see something special rather than just another beck set you’ll end up seeing in chicago anyways.

i still want to fly to chicago just to slap you

kappel- you’re the man. I swear, long lost brothers…that have yet to meet. OK I did make it pretty clear the plan was to start at Plant and Krauss and make my way to Beck, but that has gone from maybe to definite.

    Justine, Andy-

I love you guys and I know you may both be at Beck and it will be pretty easy to convince me to come with you at the time, but know that I’ll always regret not seeing Robert Plant, so don’t try to convince me! I’ll find you. I mean, I made my way through the Sherwood Forest a bunch of times, right?
