Monterey Pop Festival

-A.S. I sort of recall a certain day towards the end of April my senior year of college when Zack and I decided to enjoy quite a few sandwiches from the comfort of my couches and watched the Monterey Pop Festival documentary. The other day I saw it was going to air on Palladia, and set it to record. I watched it last night with my brother and one of his friends, and it is truly awesome. See the Who smash their equipment, Jimi light his guitar on fire and one of the best live vocal performances of all time in Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now).” I also can’t leave out Simon and Garfunkel’s performance of “Feeling Groovy (59th St. Bridge Song), a personal favorite of mine.

It was fun to see a bunch of the footage from the festival, aside from the performances. It made me really miss festivals. I also noticed that hippies used to wear much cooler threads, and seemed much less annoying to me than they do now. I also didn’t see anyone with dreads. When did this trend start and why? You aren’t rasta, cut your hair you smelly hippie. If I never have a dancing hippie dancing in front of me and get their dreads tossed in my face, I can die a happy man.

Sorry for the tangent. The moral of the story is that the Monterey Pop Festival was one of the all time great moments in rock and roll history. Some of the most famous performers and performances of all time were there. The 3-DVD set is part of the Criterion Collection, and can be purchased on Amazon for under 5o bones. Do it. Do it.

Best festival ever? Yeah, I might have to agree. These DVD’s are insanely good and they ARE on criterion. I don’t know why you went out of your way to say they weren’t capt. double negative.

  2. Gabe Said,

It is a pretty awesome festival movie. But the best is Ravi Shankar’s performance. Someone needs to bring the Sitar back.

I think Andy Bernard tried to bring it back. Not sure how well he did though…
