A night of first’s: Galactic at The Vic

Posted by admin On February - 7 - 2009

~Z.T~ It started with dinner at an Italian restaurant with Galactic’s sax player Ben Ellman, third cousin of Festival Crashers’ own Jennie Ellman. I met them for the tail-end of a family dinner at Leona’s down the street from the Vic. I awkwardly pulled up a chair between two tables as they were all done eating, but it was nice to not have to worry about whether the band had gone on, since their horn section was with us.
Ben Ellman kept it funky all night. Don’t you see the family resemblance?

Somehow I’ve never been to The Vic or seen Galactic before, but there’s a first for everything. The band came out funky with “Moil” and “Spiderbite” and kept it that way all night. It was a festival-friendly crowd with a number of molly mumblers, Rothbury shirts and far away eyes. I don’t know why, but the last three people I’ve run into with Rothbury shirts seemed like they never quite came back from whatever they were on that weekend. Thankfully that trend ended tonight.I took a pic of the set-list in the dressing room back stage.

The funk/jazz-rock band from New Orleans has no singer, but I was too busy grooving to their sweet NOLA sound. After four songs, they welcomed The Gift of Gab to the stage. The “close your eyes so you can hear what he’s saying” master himself. At Lolla ’06 I was dragged away from Gnarls Barkley in the middle of “Crazy” to hear Gift of Gab w/ Blackalicious and didn’t regret it for a second. He is a beast on the mic. He got the crowd hyped up and had us sing the ABC’s with him and ended it with “Galactic won’t you play with me.” I knew that meant “Alphabet Aerobics” was coming next and got so excited Jennie looked scared…

If you watched that, you should understand my excitement. That excitement quelled immediately after when I had half a beer flung on me. Gift of Gab got me back into it by managing to work “Obama” and “deep dish pizza” into one freestyle. Far more effective than saying “I love you, Chicago.”

We made our way to the front row, but didn’t stay too long as the bass exploded through the front speaker like a Wet Willie, but with Bigfoot’s dick instead of a wet finger. The final song of the encore was a vicious “Moby Dick”-esque song with a drum solo that had drummer Stanton Moore standing up and taking a walk around the kit to hit it from all sides. It ended with what can only be described as a reverse cowgirl where the kit was the guy and Stanton Moore was the girl. He faced the crowd with his arms swinging his sticks behind him to beat the bass drum.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, reverse cowgirl is the best way to finish. Thanks for letting us crash, Galactic.
