Andy’s Playlist

andy@ZackTeibloom Andy’s mix is alphabetical. That’s mixtake* number one. Other than that, it’s a mostly impressive line-up of 20 tracks, but too many singles, not enough deep cuts or message songs and two Guitar Hero songs.

The mix-up:

1. Beastie Boys “Rhymin’ and Stealin'” 9.5 Nothing wrong with this song. I had high hopes.

2. The Beatles “Hey Bulldog” 9.1 Not in my top 75 Beatles songs (I can actually back this up if you make me, unlike the Aerosmith fiasco.) It is a great driving song, BUT you clearly never went back and made a flow for the mix. You put two Bea bands in a row. I’d understand if that happened for like tracks 6-7, but so much hinges on the first two tracks of a mix.
3. Black Crowes “Hard to Handle” 8.4 Look who’s still going right down the line alphabetically, picking a big single from a band he’s always loved far more than me.
4. Cake “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” 9.6 Always loved this song, and this video is a treat.

5. CSNY “Almost Cut My Hair” 9.7 As a guy with relatively long hair, I’ve always identified with this ditty. I even put this on my goodbye playlist for the party.
6. David Bowie “Ziggy Stardust (live Santa Monica ’72)” 7.7 One of my favorite Bowie songs, but the version isn’t mixed that clearly.
7. The Doors “Roadhouse Blues” 8.5 Finally a song about driving.
8. Foo Fighters “Monkey Wrench” 8.6 Really? Using a guitar hero song?
9. The Fratellis “Chelsea Dagger” 9.5 As good for driving as it is for celebrating hockey goals.

10. Jimi Hendrix “Crosstown Traffic” 10.0 A staple of any good drive. More of a city driving song, but I would never complain about this one.
11. Joe Cocker “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” 7.2 Sorry, not my favorite Cocker. It always makes me wish I was listening to Abbey Road.
12. Michael Jackson “Bad” 8.3 Maybe my 5th favorite song on Thriller. <–(I’m retarded. It’s on Bad. Thanks Josh.)
13. Paul McCartney “Maybe I’m Amazed” 9.9 Paul’s first great post-Beatles song. Kind of a romantic song, but I’ll take it. Love you too, Shorez.

14. Paul Simon “Under African Skies” 9.8 Nothing wrong with this song. One of my favorites on a top-25 all-time album.
15. Red Hot Chili Peppers “Suck My Kiss” 8.4 Another Guitar Hero song.
16. Rolling Stones “Sympathy For the Devil” 9.6 If I wanted to listen to 97.1 on the way out, I would have.
17. Sly and the Family Stone “Thank You (Felletin me be mice elf again)” 10.0 This is a great call.

At Rothbury, we both wandered off at the end of Dave’s encore and somehow ended up on the complete other side of the field, busting mooves to a scorching cover of this song.
18. Sublime “Garden Grove” 9.6 About driving, chill, perfect.
19. The Who “I Can See for Miles” 8.2 Well, I can see why you think Bonham>Moon if you think this is a top-notch Who song. It’s not. It’s a car commercial song.
20. Led Zeppelin “Moby Dick” 10.0 Well played, sir.

Flow: 4/10 – He didn’t do any order at all except Moby Dick. It was Alphabetical. Like the word flow.
Theme: 8/10- Three driving songs. Zero goodbye songs. Two inside joke songs.
Songs: 9.08/10 (Yes, I actually calculated it.)
Overall (not an average) 8.4

* This was not on purpose, but I liked it after I saw it.

After I move into my apt. I’ll post Hilary and Laura’s “Genius” mixes.

  1. Shore Said,

Weak sauce. A 4.2 for flow based on the NAMES OF THE BANDS? It’s all about the MUSIC. Names of bands don’t make up a mix, the songs they play do. This mix flows just fine. It mixes rockers, with funk and enough breathers in between. Rob Gordon would be proud.

  2. Shore Said,

I would listen to "Rhymin' & Stealin'" and "Hey Bulldog" hundreds of times in a row and never once worry about the fact that both band's names start with Bea.

"Hey Bulldog" happens to be in my top-5 Beatles songs…

  3. Teibs Said,

So you’re going away to an island, told you can take 5 Beatles songs with you…you’re taking “Hey Bulldog” over:

    Hey Jude
    In My Life
    Getting Better
    Strawberry Fields Forever
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
    Happiness is a Warm Gun
    Good Morning, Good Morning
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    Two of Us
    I am The Walrus
    Day Tripper
    All You Need is Love
    I Want To Tell You
    She Said, She Said
    Tomorrow Never Knows
    Penny Lane
    Baby You’re a Rich Man
    Helter Skelter
    Taxman
    Yesterday
    Norwegian Wood
    I’m Only Sleeping
Got To Get You Into My Life
    Let It Be
    Something
    The End

The end indeed. Need i go on? is 25 enough? Not for one second ever would I put “Hey Bulldog” over any of these. Top 5?!

  4. Teibs Said,

i have nothing against “Hey Bulldog.” it’s a strong song. And I honestly didn’t even realize it was all alphabetical until today, but despite you thinking through which alphabetical song came next, a true genius mix should not have any alphabetical order, let alone 19 straight.

The order should solely go by when the songs should be plaved next to each other. You’ll see when I post Hilary and Laura’s.

  5. Shore Said,

I picked each song based on which song I thought should go next. I’m glad you’re trying to be more clever than you like indie rock better, though.

  6. Shore Said,

The rest of my top-5? Baby You’re a Rich Man, Helter Skelter, Got To Get You Into My Life and Good Day, Sunshine…and if we’re including covers, I’d replace my last one with Mr. Postman.

  7. Josh Said,

You do realize that Michael Jackson’s “Bad” cam from the album of the same name and not Thriller right?? This is the king of pop we r talking about. How about showing an alleged child molester some respect??

Josh is the only one making sense here, besides me.
