The Genius playlists

@ZackTeibloom I made it to Austin. It was mostly a successful drive, except for losing about 5 hours to a blizzard in and around Memphis. I’d like to chalk my successful journey up to 5 killer mix tapes my friends made me at my going away party. iTunes likes to brag about it’s Genius play lists, but as Andy’s favorite quote on Facebook and Twitter will tell you, “If there is such thing as a genius, I am one, and if there isn’t, then I don’t care.” -John Lennon

Oh, are you? Well, it was totally inappropriate. OK, it’s a strong mix, but not “Genius.”

Andy, Laura, Hilary, Tatar and Lesley each made a mix and A.S. was so confident his was the best, he labeled his “BEST MIX IN THE WORLD.” It wasn’t even the best mix in the car.

A genius mixtape should have a theme, build from a fast first track, keep your interest with deep cuts and wildcards and wind down at the end to a big finish. There should be messages songs and inside joke songs. This mix did some of that, but not enough to be called a genius.

  1. Shore Said,

Conditions were not ideal. My ADD never stood a chance with lots of other people around and blaring music.

  2. Shore Said,

It was not the Best Mix in the World. It was only a Tribute.

  3. Rob Said,

Here is “Rob’s Magical Trip Extender Mix.” Guaranteed to make an hour of driving seem like 7:

    1. “We built this City on Rock and Roll” Jeferson Starship
    2. “Revolution 9” The Beatles
    3. “MacArthur Park” Richard Harris
    4. “The Moment” Kenny G
    5. “You’re Beautiful” James Blunt
    6. “Union Federal” Phish
    7. “How to Save a Life” The Fray
    8. “My heart will go on” Celine Dion
    9. “Just another day” Jon Secada
    10. “Mambo #5” Lou Bega
    11. “Chicken Noodle Soup” Webstar and Young B
    12. “Macarena” Los del Rio (You knew it was coming)
    13. “I would do anything for love” Meatloaf
    14. “Mmm Mmmm Mmm Mmm” Crash Test Dummies
    15. “Who Let the Dogs Out” Baja Men

I have never tried, but I have a theory that listening to these songs in this order will result in your brain shutting off and killing you to end the pain. I will FedEx you 5 bucks if you burn this and listen to the entire thing from start to finish.

hahahah i love when you do the opposite of what’s asked. I actually enjoy Meatloaf’s “Anything for Love,” though.

  5. Rob Said,

Funny, my parents and teachers hated it when I did the opposite of what they asked.

  6. Shore Said,

You sure hated on my mix, but at least you wrote about it. Hilary, Laura, Leslie and Tater got no such love.
