The “Genius of Love” Mix

@ZackTeibloom Ahh Laura, she’s learned well. That’s not fair. She taught me just as much as I taught her. She’s a Festival Crasher of her own accord. I mean, she’s crashed more shows than Shore has.She knows the art of the mix. The way you have to start strong. The message songs. The importance of transitions. It’s a work of art if you do it right. And she did it the best of anyone. It doesn’t hurt that she and I have a much stronger Venn diagram* of shared music loves than Shore and I do.

The “Genius of Love” Mix

1. The Kinks “This Time Tomorrow” 10 What better lyric could you start with than this one: “This time tomorrow, where will we be? On a spaceship somewhere, sailing across an empty sea…”
2. Paul Simon “You Can Call Me Al” 9.6 I sang this song in 7th grade music. I’d like to say the flashes of brilliance you see when I take over the mic on Rockband now were there then, but I sucked.
3. Animal Collective “For Reverend Green” 10 Not only a fantastic track off Animal Collective’s epically brilliant Strawberry Jam, but insanely appropriate since I planned on seeing Reverend Green before a Memphis blizzard sidetracked me.
4. The Beatles “Getting Better” 10 Quite possibly the best song on Sgt. Pepper. Yeah, I said it. The best song on the most important album of all time. Hahahah “Hey Bulldog” top-5. That’s almost as preposterous as your Shake Your Money Maker top-5 album claim, Shore. Ya feel me, Kappel?

5. Beck “Cellphone’s Dead” 9.5 Again, not the single but the best song off a album (The Information) most never got into. The “One by One I’ll knock you out” refrain is effective for driving long distances, believe you me.
6. Bob Dylan “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When you go” 10+ The essential leaving song. Seriously, I should deduct a point from anyone who didn’t have this song on their mix.
7. The White Stripes “Let’s Build a Home” 10 Ahh, what do we have here? Oh, it’s a recording of Jack White as a little boy singing a song to his parents, followed by blistering guitars and a song about building a home. FTW!

8. Tom Tom Club “Genius of Love” 9.8 I recently read about 10 pages of discussion about this song alone. It’s the only non-Talking heads song on Stop Making Sense. Essentially, they needed a song w/o Byrne, so he could put on the big suit and “take a toot” of the white stuff. Yeah, that’s a direct quote.

The song infuriated Tina Weymouth’s sisters, who were left off the live performance for back-up singers, even though they’re the original singers of the song.
9. Of Montreal “A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger” 9.7 Of Montreal is unofficially our band. I texted her to say I was at their show in Rothbury before even asking if we both liked them. I assumed she loved them and she got me the leaked copy of Skeletal Lamping way early.
10. LCD Soundsystem “All my Friends” 9.9 I’ve said my shpeal about this album, but this song has a driving beat that makes, well, driving a lot easier.

11. Frank Zappa “Camarillo Brillo” 9.9 The first song that ever got me into Frank Zappa, but this song opens albums, it doesn’t close them.

Flow: 9.7
Songs: 9.85
Overall: 9.9 Should have had at least three more songs, but she made it like she is: Short and wonderful. Thanks for the mix, I treasure it.

* Venn diagram jokes are incredibly effective. Trust me.

  1. Shore Said,

You look just as queer in this picture, as the one I used of you from this party. Despite Laura on your arm.

  2. Shore Said,

There is a big difference between top-5 favorite and top-5 best. I would not put either my choices in their respective top-5 best. That song and that album hold special places in my heart, that elevate them above the rest.

I don’t hate on you for liking indie rock…

  3. Teibs Said,

The guy who hasn’t gotten laid since well before Phish last took a stage together calling me queer? Interesting.

I can’t really argue with your personal taste, but I can make fun of it.

And yeah you do kind of hate on me for liking indie rock.

  4. Shore Said,

Zing. You know how to cut to the core of me, Baxter.
