Kool Keith at Mohawk

sexykeith@ZackTeibloom I was more in love with the venue and the crash than I was with the music. It was a solid hip-hop show, but I was rarely overwhelmed. I have to admit the James Brown during the set break was the musical highlight.

The opening DJ picked fun 90s classics like “Juicy,” “Nothin’ but a G thing,” and “Jump Around,” but he let them play out way too long instead of sampling then effectively.

He had one little mash-up where he had a bit of “Sweet Home Alabama” behind a nice beat, but those were few and far between. The crowd was kind of in a holding pattern until Kool Keith took the stage.

Even then, aside from the girl in the green dress twirling around like she stole my Sparks supply, there was little dancing aside from on-stage. Kool Keith brought the ladies on stage for a little booty grinding, but his adamance that they stay in the “VIP” after they left the stage was a bit off-putting.

I’d write more about Kool Keith, but he rhymed Boston with Austin twice. This ain’t a movie, dog. Phish reunites today and Pitchfork line-up just dropped. Moving on.
