@Written by the great and knowledgeable Icculus If it was possible to top the hype around Phish’s comeback, they did it. Phish reclaimed their rightful spot as the best touring band in the world Friday night. A brilliant hour and fifty minute first set kicked off with two classics from Junta.

Opening with the 16-minute “Fluffhead,” feeding into a 14-minute “Divided Sky.” Phish kept the crowd in hysterics with “Chalkdust Torture” and “Sample in a Jar.” It only got better with their deepest jam of the set on a 12-minute “Stash,” a version that will go down as one of the most impressive to date.

phishmanAll Charlie could manage to text from inside the Mothership after the epic first set was, “Whoa. A second text came: “Dude. Whoa.”

When asked about banter and if they were tight, he replied, “Not one word from the band. And they are uber-tight.” After listening to the first set, he’s absolutely right. What a force of nature they’ve practiced themselves into again. What a treat.

Kappel called as they left the venue, saying, “They surpassed expectations. I’m the skeptic so I was worried I wouldn’t be into it, but I was. No noodling, tight jams.”

I got more from a couple twitter friends:

@Auzzie07: First set break. Hour and fifty minute first set. F***ing epic. Phish 3.0. Is sick.
@rprice23: Hearing that Phish is really tight tonight; sounding distinctly ’98ish; they nailed rift esp. Page.
