blackkey1-A.S. Many questions exist when one member of a duo announces a solo tour. How does that conversation even go? My biggest question after seeing Dan Auerbach Friday night at the Metro was if it really was possible that he rocked harder solo than with the Black Keys.

The first thing that I noticed was that it took two drummers/percussionist to match the blistering beats of Patrick Kearny. At times the band got their folk on, and many times they took on the blues rock sound that Auerbach has mastered with the Black Keys.

Back by the opening band, Those Darlings, Dan Auerbach put on quite the show in front of a sold out Metro crowd. They kicked off the night with the folk tune “Trouble Weighs A Ton.” As I was thinking how it was nice to hear fresh songs from Auerbach after catching the Black Keys three times this summer, he flashed his guitar chops on “Street Walkin.'” “When the Night Comes,” an excellent lullaby track, fit perfect as Auerbach wound down the set with it.

At first I couldn’t tell if I had just seen the Black Keys too many times last summer, and was glad for a change. The longer the concert went on, the more Dan Auerbach impressed me. His new creative outlet has grown into a force to be reckoned with. For any fan of the Black Keys, and folk or blues in general, Dan Auerbach is not to be missed.
