@AndyShore Welcome to the hangover show. At least that’s how Jeff Austin introduced it. A forlorn Austin and Brendan Bayliss took the stage Wednesday night at Shuba’s, struggling to recall the events of the night prior.

30db, which is Austin of YMSB and Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee, thanked the crowd for being able to get off the couch after the St. Patrick’s Day show from the night before. The two whispered into the microphones, promising a quite show that would not worsen any headaches.

Bayliss admitted to being so drunk that he left his girlfriend at the bar. Austin owned up to a drunk dial to his girlfriend at 4:30am. They asked the crowd to refresh their memories of the night before to see if they’d been good boys.

The original material that these two have been working on sounds great, but what stuck with me last night was their comical banter. Austin riffed on the awesomeness of Portillos. Somehow the topic of Acid and Guinness arose, and Austin wondered aloud if that was the title of a Ween album. Then, in unison, Bayliss and Austin sang “these are a few of my favorite things.” Austin made fun of Bayliss’ height so often, that Bayliss admitted to wearing boots to appear taller.

Some of their new songs don’t even have names yet. One was in the key of D. When Austin asked Bayliss the key of another song, Bayliss’ answer was “the key of awesome.” Some songs were instrumental, and others had vocals. The two harmonized on songs like “Liar” and teased “Blackbird” during their song about a humming bird called “Fly By.”

Austin played a solo song, as Bayliss ducked out a back door to pee by a dumpster. Bayliss crooned “Wait Around” as Austin emptied his tank. The two rejoined, and covered “Sugaree” quite aptly, despite Austin needing cues from the crowd on the final verse. Originals “One Man Show” and “20 More One Mores” sounded fantastic, and wound the crowd down quite well.

The half full venue provided for a nice, intimate show. Austin and Bayliss often interacted with the crowd with Bayliss even going so far as to request a bar tab to get beers for any crowd member who said something witty. ”

After Bayliss and Austin pretended to leave the stage for an encore, they ended the night with “Susanna.” Stay tuned for their debut album, due out this fall.
