DOES KANYE GET IT?

UPDATE: He officially doesn’t get it and he never, ever will. Obama said so. By the way, I hated Kanye before hating Kanye was cool.

You’ve watched the Kanye South Park episode. You’ve seen his response. Now, the question presents itself: Does Kanye get it? From his latest post, it seems like he just might: NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!”

Are his “squid brains” rants and MTV Europe stage crashing days over? Is the “I’m the greatest rapper alive, I’m voice of the generation, I would be in the modern bible” B.S. finally out of his system? Let’s break down the walls on this Truman show and get in the head of the gay fish.

Call Kanye a gay fish and he’s angry for a day. Teach him to stop fishing for compliments and he’ll be less angry for life. Supposedly.

If you asked me between May ’08 and March ’09 if Kanye would change, I would have laughed. The only thing old Kanye understood was that Kanye was the best thing in the world and any evidence to the contrary was blasphemy. He seemed destined to forever be the self-obsessed d-bag I’ve come to love to hate. Now, I’m not so sure.

On one hand, he’s talking the talk on his blog, walking the walk at SXSW and vowing to change. On the other, he’s building his own empire in the most ego stroking way possible with his own fragrance, shoe and energy drink.

His blog post seemed sincere. I mean, it was still in caps and he still felt compelled to remind us it was him, (as if we couldn’t tell) but he did take all responsibility for what was a pretty harsh attack.

I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT.

He’s actually been doing that. And before South Park told him to. He wrote a post a couple days ago that he had this ego epiphany before South Park tore him a new one (though I’d be most mad if I was Carlos Mencia.) At his SXSW showcase, Kanye was eager to share the spotlight with up and coming rappers, gave all proper respect to Common and Erykah Badu and didn’t feel the need to make it all about himself.

It seems like at 31, Kanye’s finally growing up and taking the Murtaugh list to heart. He even has a sense of humor. Almost. Today, Kanye wrote that the manage at Cheesecake Factory brought him a plate of fish sticks. His response: “(in a sarcastic tone) uuuuuuum, GREAT! : /”

In other Kanye news, he announced a fragrance and energy drink. I don’t know how to feel about that. Sure, he’s just building his empire in the natural progression of a megastar, but someone trying to work on their launcing a drink and smell of themelves seems a bit counter-productive.

He knows what he’s up against: “I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE.” Will Kanye change? I can’t wait to find out.
