cornellriv @AndyShore The reviews for Chris Cornell’s latest album, Scream, have been quite mixed. Trent Reznor mused on Twitter that he thought Cornell had embarrassed himself. I happen to love the new disc. It seems to me when you put one of the best producers in music with one of the best singers around, you can’t fail. I was excited to see him, to determine how the new tracks sounded live.

Cornell’s band began the show with “Part of Me.” The crowd went nuts as Cornell took the stage, already singing the first lyrics of the song. Kicking off the show with that and “Time,” it seemed like the crowd was receiving the new tracks well. The James Bond Theme, “You Know My Name,” also drew a good response from the crowd.

Dipping into some of his older stuff, the crowd really erupted for Audioslave’s “Show Me How to Live.” The crowd also sang along to every word of to “Be Yourself.” Cornell broke it down for his well known cover of “Billie Jean” with the crowd hitting some of the high notes he doesn’t include on his version of the song.

The band left the stage, as Cornell picked up his acoustic guitar. A short acoustic set included a cover of “Redemption Song” and Soundgarden’s “Fell On Black Days.” The band rejoined Cornell onstage for “Watch Out,” which was a lot more fun live than it is on the album. After a few more songs, Cornell was cut off due to the All Ages curfew. He even twittered today about his desire to play for longer, but thanked Chicago for a good show.

Though the first two songs Cornell played off Scream garnered big reactions from the crowd, it may have just been the energy of the beginning of the show. For the rest of the show, the biggest cheers came were for older songs. The younger members of the crowd seemed to enjoy the new stuff more. I guess you can’t please all the people, all the time.
