American Idol Top 7: Disco Week

Posted by shore On April - 21 - 2009

lil71 @AndyShore I wasn’t pleased to see Matt Giraud get saved last week. It’s not that I don’t like him. I just feel like he hadn’t been performing up to par. I do, however, think that he might be great this week. Disco week just seems to be right up his alley. Him and Adam Lambert. Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta may struggle with this theme. They’ve both got rough, rocker voices that you don’t generally find in disco. Two will go home tomorrow, expect everyone’s A game tonight. As the great Zohan would say, “Disco! Disco!”

7:02 WTF? Was that a rock hands failure from Paula?

7:04 What? No montage and almost no introduction? Fox must be pressing American Idol to get in on time this week. Lil Rounds is performing Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman.” The judges keep waiting for Lil to bust out of her slump, and this wasn’t the week. I have to agree with Simon, when he says this might be her last week.

7:13 Kris Allen is singing Donna Sommer “She Works Hard For The Money.” I’ll give it to Kris. He does a great job of making songs his own. The issue I have with it, is that this time, his own kind of sounds like Jason Mraz. His voice sounds good though, and I feel like the judges and the fans will love this performance. I really dig the arrangement. Way to spin Disco week in your favor, Kris.

7:23 Danny Gokey is singing Earth, Wind & Fire “September.” Zack requested an explanation as to why I didn’t think wanting to see Earth, Wind & Fire needed an explanation. Even an American Idol contestant (albeit one of my favorites) singing their music makes me want to see them. I was worried about Danny this week, but he sounds great. One of his best performances in weeks.

7:28 Allison Iraheta is singing “Hot Stuff.” Sitting on the moving staircase, she starting off well. I think she’s doing a better job of making this song her own, but this is not one of her best performances. This arrangement did not suit her. Martha Stewart is in the house, she knows a thing about arrangements. I bet Martha would agree with me. Randy did. Simon called her performance brilliant, but I’m shocked he didn’t say anything about her outfit. Maybe Paula saying he shops in the women’s section, made him think twice about doling out fashion advice.

7:36 Adam Lambert is singing “If I Can’t Have You.” I’m running out of positive adjectives to describe Adam Lambert. He took this upbeat song, slowed it down, and made it his bitch. Adam’s the top, and he made that song his bottom. This is Adam Lambert’s competition to lose.

7:46 Perhaps inspired by his save last week, Matt Giraud is singing “Staying Alive.” He’s not even trying to hit the high notes. He sounds better than he did last week, but the bar has been set pretty high. He has the Paula Abdul standing and dancing seal of approval. She does seem especially medicated tonight, though.

7:54 Anoop Desai is singing “Dim All the Lights.” He’s taking another crack at a slightly faster song. I like Anoop Dogg a lot, but this was not one of his best performances. He missed a few notes, including the last one. He opted for dressing like Andre 3000 instead of that ridiculous sailor blazer he rocked last week.

Best of the week: Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.

In trouble: Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Anoop Desai.
