Ladysmith Redlions of South Africa

ladysmith-redlions @ZackTeibloom After checking out a few bands that weren’t doing it for us (I’m looking at you, Dave Egan & Water Seed) Andy and I were beckoned into the Blues tent, “empty as a pocket with nothing to lose.”*

I was instantly captivated by the sweet a capella sounds of Ladysmith Redlions.

If Paul Simon wanted to perform “Diamonds on the Soles of My Shoes” and the entire Graceland album tomorrow at Jazzfest, he could have the guys from Ladysmith Redlions as his backing male singers and not miss a beat

The room smelled like retirement (blame the overhead misting fans and, well, a lot of old people) but those voices put a smile on my face. “That’s one way to lose these walking blues.”

The inflections, the rising and falling and harmonizing sounded almost identical to “Diamonds on the Soles of my Shoes.” These guys didn’t have diamonds on their shoes, but their lion cuffs were pretty bad-ass. Every seat in the tent was taken, so after Andy snuck a few pictures in, we found a spot off to the side and took it all in. The harmonies. The retirement smell. The African booties. Ta na na. Ta na na na na.

*I mostly used that line b/c it’s from “Diamonds on the Soles of my Shoes,” but I really did have zero dollars in my pocket and lived entirely off free water and apples from the Sync Up hospitality tent. Andy- I’m paying for cabs tomorrow.
