“Trombone Shorty”- the child prodigy turned prodigy

tromboneshorty@ZackTeibloom Known around New Orleans as a child prodigy who played a trombone before he was even old enough to reach all the positions on the slide, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has dropped the child from child prodigy. Like Bow Wow, but far more talented.

The prodigy dazzled on the trombone Friday afternoon, but got the most attention from the crowd for his sultry cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” on trumpet. His circular breathing and ability to command an audience makes him a formidable weapon with his band Orleans Avenue.

He’s only 23, but he’s already been a bandleader for 17 years and has toured with Lenny Kravitz and performed with U2 and Green Day. If that’s not enough, he was named Offbeat magazine’s Performer of the Year twice. The Edge and Bono saw him when he was 12 and spent the night loving it, dancing on tables after a few tequilas.

Shorty has been the talk of New Orleans for years with reason and seems destined to be a JazzFest staple for decades to come.
