Joe Cocker @ Jazzfest – With a Little Help from my Friends

joe-cocker@ZackTeibloom I gotta say, Joe Cocker is a pretty lucky rock star. Let me know how this skill set would work out for most performers:  You never write a song, never learn an instrument and exclusively sing covers of instant classics that seem untouchable.

It probably wouldn’t take you too far. Cocker followed that path, opened for The Stones, got Jimmy Page to take lead guitar on his cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” got the blessing of The Beatles to cover all their songs, plays Woodstock and got the “Wonder Years” theme song gig. How? He’s just that good.

I knew we’d get one Beatles cover. I hoped for two. We got three. The inevitable “With a Little Help from My Friends,” the classic “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” and the surprise “Come Together.” Each had their distinct Cocker take, each was jammed out with nasty solos by the guitarist and each was drawn out into a both-hands-held-high-above-your-head, ear-to-ear smile, sing-a-long.

I was joking with Andy as we walked to the stage if he had a man crush on Joe Cocker. It’s hard to love that face. As great as he still sounds, Cocker looks like a monster. His eye bulges, he still lurches like he did when Belushi would mock him,* and he may be the king of covers, but he has very little coverage up top.

Andy was in the photo pit for the first two songs, including mood-setter “Feelin’ Alright.”

“It was no Paul at Coachella, but that was f***ing sweet” Andy said to me immediately after. It really was.

@Andy Shore Cocker busted out all the stops, aside from the Beatles hits. He crooned to the crowd on tunes like “When the Night Comes,” “Up Where We Belong” and “You Are So Beautiful.” Some of those tunes especially touched an older couple standing in front of us, and they displayed that with some awkward Ravinia dancing. Other highlights from the set included “Unchain My Heart” and “Long As I Can See the Light.”

The show was everything I had hoped it would be. A crowd-wide sing-along that left me smiling ear to ear. I hope to catch Cocker again this summer when he comes to Ravinia, and laugh at all the Baby Boomers doing their Ravina dances.

*Belushi as Cocker

Wish there was more Belushi as Cocker? There is…
