American Idol Top 5 Perform

krisallen5 @AndyShore Back for another American Idol live blog. My apologies for missing out on the results show last week, but I was in transit to New Orleans for Jazz Fest. I did think of American Idol while I was there. During Earth, Wind and Fire, I told Zack that Danny Gokey had performed “September” when the EWF started playing the song. Tonight’s theme is standards from the Rat Pack era. The contestants are looking quite dapper in their Rat Pack attire.

7:02 Nice prom dress, Paula.

7:03 While waiting to find out who their mentor would be this week, Kris Allen quipped, “Everyone from the rat pack era is…well…dead.” They were genuinely thrilled to find out it was Jamie Foxx.

7:05 Kris Allen looks exactly like Seacrest tonight. Right down to the tie bar.

7:10 Kris Allen is singing, in his own words, “”The Way You Look Tonight,” tonight.” Jamie Foxx told Kris that if American Idol doesn’t work out for him, they could do something together. It should be no surprise that Kris sounds good tonight. It’s the perfect night to sound like Jason Mraz (who was a musical theater major and can croon with the best of them). For me, this is one of Kris’ top two performances of the season. Randy agrees, calling his vocals “mad nice.”

7:16 Thank you Seacrest, for trying to figure out what Simon meant by calling Kris’ performance “wet.” Simon explaining it as “not dry” did not help. Seacrest had a good response, though, telling Kris to go dry off before sending the show to commercial break.

7:21 Allison Iraheta is singing “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Jamie Foxx goes, “you’re too told to be in love. What are you? 12? 13?” Not only does she sound great, it seems that she’s learned some mic technique. I thought Allison would only be able to play the rocker chick for so long, and she’s shown me how well she can downright sing. Wow. Randy: “you sing like Pink, but with 9,000 more octaves.”

7:32 Matt Giraud is singing “My Funny Valentine.” I’m not sure how I felt about that performance. He just isn’t as good as the rest of the top-5. Simon called it “believable and authentic,” though.

7:43 Danny Gokey is singing “Come Rain or Come Shine.” I was unsure about Danny’s performance for the first half of that song, but he just nailed the second half out of the park. He is surely a fan favorite, no doubt. The judges really liked Danny’s performance too. They can tell that Danny feels like he can win this.

7:54 Adam Lambert is singing “Feeling Good.” Check out that swagger from Adam Lambert. He knows he’s got American Idol nation eating out of the palm of his hand. Even Jamie Foxx thought Adam was going to “knock everyone’s heads off.” Honestly, is there any question that Adam Lambert is winning this competition? Paula: “every performance is like watching the Olympics, and you’re our Michael Phelps.” Simon: “Randy calling your performance theatrical is like complaining that a cow moos.”
