01ludalittle5001 300x225 Ludacris @ Little 5: “The World’s Greatest College Weekend”@JordanLipshutz Last night was a spectacle to be seen. Yes, Ludacris played a frat party. After a day of horrible tests and constant running around, I could NOT think of a better way to start my first “World’s Greatest College Weekend.”

My boys and I showed up at the ATΩ/ACACIA parking lot really early about 45 minutes after the gates opened at 6. The crowd was already starting to gather and I got my first festival conditioning of the year by staking out our spot 50 feet from the stage. When I got a chance to look around I noticed “EJ,” Eric Gordon himself, just hangin’ out shootin’ J’s.

Next, my brother, DJ Zeke took the stage with a rapper that I think called himself Fresh Soul so we’re just gonna go with that. He kinda had the whole Pharrel/Lupe look going on and he was way better than the first guys. He also had live drums on stage, which added a great extra punch.

Fresh Soul played about 3 songs and then we waited and danced a good while until Nappyville came on.  Straight out of Indy, these guys were pretty good too. They were way more southern sounding and played about 5 songs. OK now on to the real deal.

We waited maybe an hour after Nappyville and around 9:00 Luda’s boys took the stage. “Southern Fried Intro” started playing and Rap’s MVP finally hopped up on stage. Working the crowd right off the bat, Ludacris got everyone’s hands in the air as he blasted into “Number One Spot.” I think I should mention at this point that the buzz around campus was that he would play three songs. Within two songs, Luda proved he was here for the crowd all night. Hit after hit, the show continued until the 10:30 noise curfew.

Some songs he played a few verses of, others he played straight through. Pretty much you name it he played it. Highlights for me included “Pimpin’ All Over The World,” a remix of Jim Jones’ “Pop Champagne,” and of course “Move Bitch.” The best by far though was when Luda invited everyone to put their lighters in the air and light up and then dropped into “Blueberry Yum Yum.”

02ludalittle500 300x225 Ludacris @ Little 5: “The World’s Greatest College Weekend”I should also mention Shawnna came out with him toward the end of the set to do a great version of “What’s Your Fantasy.” After, Shawnna got a few songs to herself and was absolutely killing it. I really don’t know if they were written rhymes or she was free styling, but her flow was unbelievable and she was spitting incredibly fast. Around this point we left to start the after-party, but I’m just gonna take a wild guess and say he closed with “Rollout.”

I don’t make it out to many rap shows, but Ludacris is one of those humble rappers that totally cares about his audience and putting on a great show. I doubt you’ll get the chance to see him play a frat party again, but anywhere you can catch him, go for it.

American Idol Top 7: Disco Week

Posted by shore On April - 21 - 2009

lil71 American Idol Top 7: Disco Week @AndyShore I wasn’t pleased to see Matt Giraud get saved last week. It’s not that I don’t like him. I just feel like he hadn’t been performing up to par. I do, however, think that he might be great this week. Disco week just seems to be right up his alley. Him and Adam Lambert. Danny Gokey and Allison Iraheta may struggle with this theme. They’ve both got rough, rocker voices that you don’t generally find in disco. Two will go home tomorrow, expect everyone’s A game tonight. As the great Zohan would say, “Disco! Disco!” Read the rest of this entry »

Lou Reed and Snoop on official Lollapalooza line-up

Posted by teibs On April - 21 - 2009

lolla2 300x139 Lou Reed and Snoop on official Lollapalooza line up@ZackTeibloom What they lack in headliners, they make up for in supporting acts. Lollapalooza’s line-up is finally out there and official. It looks a lot like the leaked line-up a few weeks ago with a few unfortunate subtractions and some exciting additions.

I did call that Tenacious D wasn’t going to play and sadly they’re not. Same with OK Go, Regina Spektor, Lily Allen and Franz Ferdinand.

Those are a few acts I really wanted to see, but there are a batch of new additions worth getting excited about: Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Dan Auerbach, STS9, Los Campesinos, Rise Against and Of Montreal.

So, what does the final line-up look like?

Chris Cornell at the Riviera Theater 4/19/09

cornellriv Chris Cornell at the Riviera Theater 4/19/09 @AndyShore The reviews for Chris Cornell’s latest album, Scream, have been quite mixed. Trent Reznor mused on Twitter that he thought Cornell had embarrassed himself. I happen to love the new disc. It seems to me when you put one of the best producers in music with one of the best singers around, you can’t fail. I was excited to see him, to determine how the new tracks sounded live. Jazz Fest: 10 Show I’m Looking Forward To (Weekend 1)

Posted by shore On April - 20 - 2009

nojhf logo Jazz Fest: 10 Show Im Looking Forward To (Weekend 1) @AndyShore I’m starting to get the festival itch, with New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival just under a week away. It’s time to start the previews. It’s time to start the hype (yes, I was singing the Muppet Show Theme Song while typing that). For this top-10, I’m sticking strictly to the shows at the festival the first weekend. I’ll cover late night shows another day, and one for the shows I wish I could see the second weekend. These are in no particular order. Read the rest of this entry »

Successful Crash #8: Austin Reggae Festival

Posted by teibs On April - 19 - 2009

reggae 300x192 Successful Crash #8: Austin Reggae Festival@ZackTeibloom “Who told you to get a bin?” the pink-haired woman running the volunteer check-in booth asked me incredulously. “Brian,” I said, making up a name. “What company does he work for?” She pushed on.

Not knowing any company working Reggae Fest, I could have admitted defeat. I changed the subject instead. “So, you don’t have any bins for us to use for the recycling project?” “I don’t understand why they would ask you to get a bin from us.” she says as her face contorts.

Realizing I’m getting deeper and deeper into a lie that makes no sense, I make my move. Read the rest of this entry »

Pitchfork Artist Additions

Posted by shore On April - 17 - 2009

pitchfork09 Pitchfork Artist Additions @AndyShore Pitchfork has hit us with more exciting additions to this years festival. The festival, which will be held in Chicago’s Union Park July 17-19, already has an impressive line up. I’m generally not an indie fan, but there are several band’s on this year’s line up that have me intrigued. This round of additions, just adds to that. Read the rest of this entry »

Bang Camaro made my rock dream come true

Posted by teibs On April - 16 - 2009

happylive 300x225 Bang Camaro made my rock dream come true@ZackTeibloom “There are two rules,” a Bang Camaro singer tells me right before my first song starts. “The first rule is, I hold the mic.” I nod.

“The second rule is, if you don’t know the lyric, if you’re not sure about the lyric, if you have any doubt about the next lyric, right before you sing it … don’t. Other than that, (he puts his arm around me) let’s rock!”

The guitars started wailing, I started head-banging, and completely forgot every lyric I’d spent all afternoon practicing in front of my mirror. Thankfully, unlike my 16 year-old Camp Chi performance of “West Side Story,”* I didn’t have a solo I could blow, so I could just head-bang, dance around, and occasionally yell a lyric as 10 other dudes carried the song.
