Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey and the GrooGux King 9.5/10

@AndyShore I’ve been ranting and raving about the new Dave Matthews Band line up ever since their best of the festival performance last summer at Rothbury. Seeing them three more times since then, only added to that excitement. I never thought about what this line up could accomplish in the studio, despite all my hype about the new line up and knowledge that DMB had been recording down in New Orleans for the past year.

The album opens with a sax solo, most likely in an homage to the late, great LeRoi Moore. While not necessarily sad, it’s a much more sullen tone than most bands would open an album with. The mood is quickly brightened with the opening riff of “Shake Me Like a Monkey” and a head bobbing realization of what the new line up has brought. Blaring horns and the gritty electric guitar of Tim Reynolds suck you in from note one. This song is sure to be a favorite of Dave fans for years to come.

“Why I Am” is another radio-friendly, single-worthy tune that rocks harder and heavier than DMB ever has before. I also know from experience they they slay this one live. Other songs like “Funny The Way It Is” and “Alligator Pie” also have that playful Dave feel that you just know will sound awesome live.

You know how shocking and hilarious it was the first time you heard Lois Griffin swear in the Family Guy movie? I had the same reaction to hearing Dave drop an f-bomb during “Time Bomb”, while only half listening to the new album while playing NHL 09. It makes it even funnier that in much of the song Dave is singing about Jesus.

I mentioned last night in my CD Release party live blog that it was so rare for a band to put their best foot forward almost 20 years into their career. Dave Matthews Band has accomplished that both with their current live show and Big Whiskey and the GrooGux King. The album provides a couple of instant classics and several tunes that are sure to become a staple of Dave’s live show. A truly impressive feat for one of the biggest bands around. 9.5/10

  1. Dankhodge Said,

I agree 100%. Love the new album. Bunch of killer tunes. And Dave’s say’s “Fuck”, which is always good.
