@ZackTeibloom “If anyone boos us tonight, we have a built in excuse,” Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy told the crowd. “They’re just yelling ‘Bruuuuuce.'”

After he said he wouldn’t mind booing, the crowd jokingly chanted a mix of “boo” and “Bruuuce” back and Tweedy responded, “I worked on that one all day. It’s a joke.”

Wilco sounds like they’ve been working as hard as ever. No joke. I was more apt to chant Jeff than Bruce after their high-powered show. I’ve seen Wilco five times and can’t remember them ever rocking that hard.* I even had to throw up too much rock for one hand signs.

Tweedy got right in the crowd’s face, playing some blistering solo’s and trading riffs with guitarist Nels Cline, who was on point all evening.

In an interview with David Fricke at JazzFest, John Stirrat said Wilco doesn’t rehearse that much before a tour, relying on their first date in Milwaukee to get tuned in, but they’re in full swing right now.

I caught the last hour of the show and still managed to hear everything I wanted to. I came in during “Jesus, Etc.” with the intention of sitting down, but was so into it, I stayed up the whole show.

Drummer Glenn Kotche stood up and started pounding the intro to “I Am The Man That Loves You” as Tweedy teased the crowd if they should play it or not. “Hummingbird,” soared over the early evening and the set was a consistent mix of crowd pleasers and new songs from their refreshingly strong new self-titled album.

Whether tackling the Woody Guthrie song “California Stars” or the smooth “Walkin,’” or a harder rock song like “I am the Man That Love You,” Wilco did it with

9.1/10

*It’s possible I remember them being a lot softer because the last time I saw Tweedy was during an acoustic performance at Lollapalooza last year.
