Rothbury Friday Preview

friday@ZackTeibloom Friday at Rothbury is quite a mixed bag. It’s a day that’ll surprise you with it’s multitude of genres, but the underwhelming headliners would make it a wandering night for me. There’s nothing I’m dying to see until Femi Kuti 5:15’s show, and I really only want to see it b/c of all the hyping from my fellow crashers.

The day does have my favorite living Marley (Damian) and my favorite DJ who’s NOT a DJ (Girl Talk) in addition to Soulive, but I’ve never been exposed to much String Cheese and I’m kind of a STS9 hater*.

I’d do my best to not get sucked into G. Love early in the day, but it’s hard to resist that cover of “Why Don’t We Do it in the Road?” I suggest wandering the grounds early Friday afternoon and seeing what catches your ear.

Now I know what Andy and Jordan are talking about after watching Femi Kuti’s “Beng Beng Beng” a few times. I so desperately want to dance to this song at Rothbury this weekend.

From Femi I’d make a bee-line to Damian Jr. Gong for a “Welcome to Jam Rock.” It’s arguably the best album in at least a decade from a Marley. Throw in some NAS and I’d be locked in. It’s hard to advocate skipping out on a Soulive show, so check out some of their set if Damian and Nas aren’t doing it for you.

I strongly suggest getting a flask of whiskey prepared for Friday night’s Flogging Molly set singing along to their “Drunken Lullabies.” I’ll admit I don’t know their catalog at all, but I have a feeling all you need to do is listen to the chorus the first time through as you spin a partner around, take a few swigs and yell stuff. That’s a good plan for any situation.

You don’t have a choice but to see String Cheese, so embrace it. I honestly can’t remember if I was at this performance at 10KLF. I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen String Cheese. They just never stuck. If I was, I was definitely transfixed by the glowstick woman. Andy- is there a more beautiful site than that glow lady dancing around? I can’t explain why it makes me so happy, but I also know I’m not alone. Long live Glowstick lady! And cheese.

Even after seeing five Girl Talk shows in the last year, it pains me to not be dancing on stage until the last bead of sweat pours off my fellow dancers Friday night at Rothbury. Check out the end of his Bonnaroo show:

*I couldn’t get into Sound Tribe in the slightest bit last year (even under optimum music enjoying circumstances.) Last Rothbury I chose to leave STS9 for a secret DJ in the forrest that may not have even existed outside of my mind. If you’re wondering why I’m ending every post by hating on a band, it’s partly because they suck, but I’d chalk a lot of it up to being jealous that I’m stuck in Austin while Rothbury goes down. I live for this. I was going to do all four days tonight, but it’s 3:30 a.m. and this is getting me more upset. Rock on, crashers. I’m there in spirit.
