The Jesus Lizard Returns @ Pitchfork

thejesuslizardpitchfork @AndyShore Like most of the bands at Pitchfork this weekend, I had no idea what to expect of the Jesus Lizard. I did know that the band had broken up over 10 years ago, and that this show at Pitchfork was highly anticipated by their fans. Much of the Pitchfork crowd remained at the Connector Stage after Tortoise, skipping Yo La Tengo, to jockey for a good spot for the reunion. The mostly middle-aged, male crowd was packed in tight, and noticeably intoxicated. Two guys in particular, were a bit rowdy. The photographers started placing bets in the pit as to when they would blow chunks. Such behavior should have clued me in as to what was about to take place.

The Jesus Lizard took the stage to a roar from the crowd. Front man David Yow moved his mic stand to the back of the stage, and took off running towards his screaming fans. With his mic in hand, he dove over the photo pit into the sea of people. The band dropped into their first song, as the crowd sang along to every word Yow uttered into the mic while surfing over them.

Yow was pushed back up to the stage and stomped around making menacing faces and spitting in between bits of screaming vocals. Storming from side to side on the stage, in a Hot Doug’s t-shirt, Yow had total control over the crowd. Though his lyrics seemed mostly incoherent to me, the screaming masses at Pitchfork seemed to know every single word. Before I knew it, Yow had dove back into the crowd for some more crowd surfing.

I’m not going to tell you I’m going to download their discography and listen to the Jesus Lizard. They just aren’t my thing. The band did, however, pleasantly surprise me with their entertaining stage show. At one point whie I was in the pit, guitar player Duane Denison took the power stance and pointed the head of his guitar towards the crowd. In one swinging motion he did the machine gun move, bringing a smile to my face. You could tell he’d been waiting 10+ years to do that again.
