pharoahemonchpitchfork @AndyShore I’m not going to lie to you. There was one main reason that I decided to check out Pharoahe Monch at Pitchfork on Sunday. I tend to have my best luck shooting hip hops acts. My photos of Lupe Fiasco from Mile High and Lollapalooza and Nas from Rothbury are some of my favorite shots to date. Not to mention the photo I have of Snoop Dogg smoking a blunt at 4:20 last summer at Rothbury. Knowing little else about Pharoahe Monch’s music besides the genre, I headed over to the pit after Blitzen Trapper.

Apparently Pharoahe Monch and crew arrived at the festival a little late (make your own black people time joke, you jerks). DJ Boogie Blind, of the X-Ecutioners, took the stage with a cocktail in hand to start sound checking and warm up the crowd. He told the crowd that he wanted to make sure all the levels were right so that they would get their money’s worth.  Boogie Blind pulled out every trick in the book to delay a show he could think of. He asked for the fellas and ladies to scream, he chided an assistant backstage for not putting ice in his drink and bantered with some of the audience in the front few rows.

Pharoahe Monch finally took the stage, backed by Boogie Blind and two back-up singers. Pharoahe Monch displayed a flow capable of captivating the hipster crowd as Boogie Blind cut up the turntables. The set included the standard hip hop song that calls for the audience to throw their middle fingers up in the air. All in all, it was a set at Pitchfork I was glad I decided to check out.

  1. Machinko Said,

i enjoyed ur review. As Monch’s female backup singer, i actually roffled @ the ‘insert black people time joke’ part. We weren’t late. we were directly behind the stage the entire time. Blind was line- checking. Im sure you know that’s what happens at festivals, in the absence of a full out sound check. :)

Luckily we’d been there for abt an hour and a half before the show. If not we’d have missed Pitchfork’s dope catering and t shirt giveaways. hehe.
