Yeah Yeah Yeahs Take Beastie’s Spot at Lollapalooza

yeahyeahyeah@ZackTeibloom It didn’t take long for Lollapalooza to find a replacement for The Beastie Boys, plugging the Yeah Yeah Yeahs into the Saturday night headlining spot. Do I think it’s an improvement? Meh, meh, meh. It’s not a bad choice. I enjoy the Yeah Yeah Yea’s, they bring a high-energy performance and should please the audience that isn’t drawn to Tool or Bassnectar, but are they headliner material? I’m not sure.

At Bonnaroo last month, I caught about 10-15 minutes of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s on my way to Grizzly Bear and Santigold and enjoyed it in passing, but it didn’t hold my attention. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are a fun three-piece and Karen O is a strong front-woman who’s adept at working the crowd, but I don’t think they have the catalog for a headlining position.

Check the opening of their afternoon set at Bonnaroo. It’s strong, for an afternoon set, but I don’t see it translating into closing down Saturday night of Lollapalooza. Karen O is good, but not headliner good. To headline a festival you need more songs, more of a stage presence and more personality. I’m not trying to knock the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I’ll admit I could know them a lot better and I think they do show a lot of signs of becoming a headliner. Just not yet. For a last-minute replacement, it’s a decent enough choice, but I’m not excited about it. I hope they prove me wrong.

I’ll probably split my time between Bassnectar and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but I would have spent the night firmly at The Beastie Boys. Hearing that Adam Youch had cancer was nothing but terrible other than the fact that they caught it early enough so it’s operable, but I was hoping the silver lining would be to see a big headliner replace them. I can’t say that happened.

Austin360 has a nifty little page where you can vote on who you’d want to replace the Beasties at ACL. I imagine they’ll bring a bigger name than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. My top 5: Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Pixies and Rage Against the Machine. Who are you hoping for at ACL? Are you happy with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

  1. The Dankness Said,

I don’t really know what everyone was expecting. Since the announcement of BBs cancellation everyone has been hoping their all time favorite band will show up and save the day. There is no way they could have gotten some huge band in such a short amount of time. There are summer tours and other summer festivals going on that same weekend, thinking Lolla could have gotten some huge headlining act was just not plausible. I love YYYs, think they are great live and really dig the new album. I agree that they are not headlining material, but lolla could have done a lot worse.

Of course ACL will find a bigger name, they have 12 weeks to do it.

  3. @MattSilver Said,

Chickenfoot would’ve been awesome. And they’ll be in town Friday night at the Chicago Theatre… I’m seeing them and would rather see them headline Lolla… Maybe play some of their songs and some Van Halen songs.

As long as Jack White plays some guitar (meaning some White Stripes and/or Raconteurs), I’d love to see The Dead Weather headline as well.
