kinetixtenk @AndyShore Last year, after tearing the roof off the Saloon stage with a monster set, a 10klf official jumped onstage and screamed that they needed to get Kinetix on a bigger stage. True to their word, Kinetix was bumped up to the Barn stage for 10klf 2009. They were set to take the stage Wednesday, opening night, immediately following Widespread Panic. As Kinetix made their way onto the stage, a roar erupted. The hill on the Barn stage was full of people eagerly awaiting their rock show.

“Own Mind” opened up the set as the crowd started moving and people continued to make their way over from Widespread. Soon, Kinetix had everyone eating up everything they served at them. The crowd sang along for “Another Brick in the Wall” and boogied down to “Out Of My Head,” a new tune the 10klf attendees hadn’t seen in previous year that included a “Gimme Some Lovin'” tease.

Then came the game changers. As the crowd grew to it’s peak, Kinetix hit them with knock out after knock out. “Ruined It” featured drummer Jack Gargan putting everything he had into an extended drum solo. Crazy fills, syncopated rhythms and some choice samples left the crowd screaming for more. From there “Mr. Sinister” and Jordan Linit’s devilish guitar solo segued into Bob Marley’s “Sun is Shining.” With Josh Fairman’s opening bass line of “People Start Hoppin'” the crowd got on their feet and jumping.

Eric Blumenfeld informed the 10klf crowd that Kinetix had a treat for them. Adam Lufkin and Blumenfeld dropped into harmony for the opening lines of “Bohemian Rhapsody” to gasps of excitement from the crowd. You could hear the buzz of people going “no way are they doing this!” As if sensing such the awesome cover from afar, the crowd instantly grew. They cheered loudly as Linit made his way to the front of the stage for his solo, and sang along to every word as Blumenfeld later did the same.

“Afraid to Fall” closed the fun and danceable late night set from Kinetix and featured a vocal breakdown from Lufkin and a Blumenfeld synth solo. The band left the stage, but the crowd begged for more. Kinetix came back out, saying they had time for one more quickie. “Sweet Emotion” sent the crowd back to their campsites, but not before rocking their socks off one last time. Blumenfeld left his keys to man the vocals from the front of the stage, and Linit dropped some jaws with a face melting, behind the back guitar solo.

The always smaller first night festival crowd came out in force for the set and surely got their money’s worth. As we headed back to the campsite, we could hear people raving about the show. One girl claimed they were the most bad ass dudes she had seen in a long while. Other people were still talking about “Bohemian Rhapsody.” One thing was for sure, Kinetix had succeeded in taking their show to the next level to match the bigger stage they had been awarded. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Glad you had as much fun at the Kinetix show as I did. I’m backed up on photo editing, but all my shots from the Kinetix show will be up on my Flickr account. Hopefully within the next week or so.
