Wilco @ 10klf

wilcotenk @AndyShore I have never been the biggest of Wilco fans. Once in a blue moon I will put on one of their albums, and usually don’t make it all the way through. The closest I had ever gotten to seeing them live was a Jeff Tweedy solo acoustic set at the Kids stage at Lollapalooza 2008. That being the case, Wilco was actually one of the bands I was most looking forward to at 10klf. Especially since Zack had some rave reviews about their set at Bonnaroo earlier this summer.

The band took the stage and played the song with their name, Wilco (The Song), which has opened all of the summer tour. After shooting the first three songs in the photo pit, I made my way back to the lawn to meet up with the rest of our modest crew. I settled into a spot in the grass just in time for another new song, “Bull Black Nova.” Jeff Tweedy’s voice sounded great and the guitar of Nels Cline was wailing most of the night. I was especially impressed with all the harmonies.

I had a great view of the stage, and sat and watched a majority of the set. Not being familiar with the better part of their catalog, I was happy to just soak it all in. Though Cline is an incredibly talented guitar player, I was not in love with his piercing guitar tone. Tweedy also impressed me with his guitar chops, though his banter could use some work. He nailed one joke though. He told the crowd he had swallowed a lot of bugs already, but that it was alright since he had a light lunch. Other banter about clapping and glowsticks had it’s moments, but went into overkill.

I stood up for the last several songs of the set, and enjoyed hearing two of the songs I actually knew. “Heavy Metal Drummer” garnered a big reaction from the crowd. “Hoodoo Voodoo” was a fun song to close their set with, and just in time too. Not a few songs into Atmosphere, which immediately followed Wilco, the rain started coming down.

Maybe a whole album of Wilco is just too much for your mind to take in.

[…] falls into the category of bands that I was never that into, that I actually loved at a festival. They killed their set at 10klf. Wilco (The Album) got heavy play from me this year, in no small part thanks to their […]
