@AndyShore My co-blogger for the weekend (that is if she decides to write any reviews), @andlaurasays, noted that Doom looked bored at Pitchfork during his performance. That is saying something, because the man performs behind a mask. Aside from the mask, I was mostly astonished at the rest of his costume. He was wearing a leafy camouflaged get up that made him look like Oscar the Grouch. For some odd reason, I don’t usually think Sesame Street when I’m seeing a hip hop show. Beastie Boys’ Adam Youch has Cancer, Beasties cancel upcoming shows
@ZackTeibloom Terrible news from the Beastie Boys camp today, as Adam Youch announced via YouTube that he has cancer in his throat. The Beastie’s are forced to push back their album release and have to cancel all upcoming gigs including Lollapalooza and ACL. This begs the question, who will take over their headlining spots?
From their publicist: “Adam “MCA” Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch’s vocal chords.” Read the rest of this entry »
Sunday Edition: 5 Must See Bands @ Pitchfork
@ZackTeibloom After the great success that was yesterday (reviews to come shortly), it’s with great anticipation and a tad bit of sadness that I attack today’s lineup. I always get a little melancholy on the last day of a festival. The tiny voice in the back of your head saying, “Yep, tomorrow you’ll be at work.” No matter. Today’s going to be glorious.
Here are five bands that I think you should check out today. Read the rest of this entry »
Matt and Kim @ Pitchfork
@AndyShore Matt and Kim took the stage at Pitchfork a bit late, but who could be mad at the ear to ear grins they were sporting. Kim said she heard the B stage was the party stage. After seeing their high energy set at Pitchfork, I can safely say that any stage Matt and Kim take is the party stage. Nobody appears to have more fun than those two, which says a lot. The hipsters went nuts for this band.
Saturday Edition: 5 bands to see @Pitchfork
@andlaurasays One day down, two more to go. With a hearty night of music under our belts and the knowledge that the Green line has TWO Ashland stops, Andy and I will once again head down to Union Park for the all-day festivities. Here’s a little preview for the day to come:
5. Fucked Up (2:30 Stage A) – Hardcore Punk doesn’t necessarily scream Pitchfork material, yet these Toronto natives are definitely going to be a highlight of the festival. Lyrics packed with Nazi references and stage names such as 10,000 Marbles, Concentration Camp, and Guinea Beat, you will never see hipsters mosh so hard in your life. Scarves will fly. Built To Spill @ Pitchfork: Making Friends
@AndyShore Built To Spill is one of the few bands playing at Pitchfork this weekend that I have actually listened to. Zack interviewed Doug Martsch prior to Langerado last summer. He told Zack he wanted to start a drum jam, so that he could go check out the Roots, who shared a set time with Built To Spill. After seeing Built To Spill at Pitchfork last night, I have to say, I’d still go see the Roots. That’s not to say that they didn’t put on a great show at Pitchfork. Read the rest of this entry »
The Jesus Lizard Returns @ Pitchfork
@AndyShore Like most of the bands at Pitchfork this weekend, I had no idea what to expect of the Jesus Lizard. I did know that the band had broken up over 10 years ago, and that this show at Pitchfork was highly anticipated by their fans. Much of the Pitchfork crowd remained at the Connector Stage after Tortoise, skipping Yo La Tengo, to jockey for a good spot for the reunion. The mostly middle-aged, male crowd was packed in tight, and noticeably intoxicated. Two guys in particular, were a bit rowdy. The photographers started placing bets in the pit as to when they would blow chunks. Such behavior should have clued me in as to what was about to take place. Read the rest of this entry »
Tortoise @ Pitchfork
@AndyShore I had only heard good things about Tortoise leading up to Pitchfork. I have several musician friends who raved about the band. I knew them as a progressive rock band, with complex songs. We arrived at Pitchfork slightly late due to some confusion with Green Line stops on the El (Seriously, city planner, who makes two Ashland stops?). As a result, I missed out on shooting Tortoise. Instead, I settled into the crowd with @andlaurasays to see what the hype was about. Read the rest of this entry »
Jack White Day Winners
@ZackTeibloom Jack White day was glorious. You all sent some wonderful video and quotes and some of you Re-Tweeted some of my Jack White love fests. Now it’s time to crown the winners.
Best quote:
@hhhancock dominated this category. He wanted it bad. He sent along over a dozen quotes and videos along and kept me pretty busy Tuesday afternoon. All of these are his: Read the rest of this entry »
