Vampire Weekend @ Lollapalooza

vampireweekendlolla @AndyShore Vampire Weekend was an interesting choice for Lollapalooza this year. 2008 was their summer, hitting major stops on the festival circuit last year. Regardless, I was looking forward to seeing them on Sunday. Despite seeing them twice prior, I had never shot them before.

You pretty much know what you’re going to get when you see them. They only have one album’s worth of material to play, and a new song or two. Given the hour-long festival set time, that’s perfect for them. Vampire Weekend doesn’t add much to their live show. There’s no guitar solos or embellishment to the songs. The most they added in the three times I’ve seen them was a string section for a few tunes.

What Vampire Weekend brings to the stage for their live act is their charm. Ezra Koenig taking the stage wearing a red flannel shirt paired with bright yellow 7os-style gym shorts has to make you smile. They stomp around on stage in the way that makes them look like the coolest nerds around. On a hot summer’s day, there’s little music I would rather listen to. Playing tunes like “A-Punk,” “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and “Oxford Comma” I was happy as can be dancing in the crowd and catching with with an old camp friend who was covering a music festival for his first time.

The banter is always great too. At Bonnaroo, Koenig teased the crowd by telling them one of their songs was their jam band tune. At Lollapalooza, it was a geography lesson about what it’s like between the East Coast and Chicago. Even when Koenig is trying to get the crowd to sing along for “One (Blake’s Got a New Face)” he makes you smile. As he shrieked the line he wanted to them to respond with, it was hilarious to hear his impression of what a crowd singing sounds like. When Koenig shows you how to sing, you do it. You can’t argue with a band that makes you dance the whole time and smile from ear to ear.
