Ezra Furman About to Burst with New Songs

Posted by teibs On August - 22 - 2009

ezralolla2@ZackTeibloom Ezra Furman rubbed his neck with a strained expression on his face as his manager told me new permanent band mate Andrew Langer would be doing most of the talking. Furman had played his first Lollapalooza that morning and had an after show at House of Blues later that night.

Even though Ezra says his least favorite part of playing shows is banter and his manager told him not to talk much during this interview, he talks up a storm on stage and chatted me up during the interview. That’s just how he operates.

The best news from the interview was Ezra saying that he feels like a pressurized hose: clamped down, about to overflow with new songs and he hopes to get into the studio by the end of the year. Hopefully that means a new Ezra Furman and the Harpoons album in 2010. And this time we’ll be treated to Andrew Langer on the album.

Langer is best known for his work with The Redwalls, but I was lucky enough to catch his new band The Sleeptalkers’ first ever show in Evanston last year when they opened for Ezra and they showed a lot of promise. He’ll be splitting his time between The Sleeptalkers and playing guitar and singing back-up for Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.

Ezra said he’ll still be spearheading all songwriting, but gave credit to the Harpoons, calling them pop geniuses. I’d been wishing that Langer would play with Ezra for good ever since I saw him play with them at Schubas in the fall. They’re last guitarist was solid enough, and I liked talking Zappa with him when he and Ezra stayed at my apartment during SXSW, but Langer is the guy they need to take them to the next level. Ezra fans should be really excited about his addition to the band. I hope it’s permanent.

I’m sad to say I was too tired* to make it to Ezra’s 11:30 a.m. show Saturday, but I got a report from Sami that he was his usual endearing self in his yellow bathrobe and they sounded great. I fully intended on making their after show at House of Blues, but was busy looking for Andy’s video camera (which I recorded this entire interview with) and never found. Because of this, I’m writing this based on memory of two weeks ago and nothing is a direct quote. A lot of FAIL on my part there. Apologies.

Ezra was wearing a homemade t-shirt with a Smiths quote and he always talks about how much he loves them, so I asked if he’d seen 500 Days of Summer. He hadn’t yet. Too busy rocking. Ezra Furman and the Harpoons are going international after a little east coast tour. They’re in New Hope, Pennsylvania (home of Ween) next week before going to Jersey and Philly, Madrid and Barcelona before going to the west coast. Catch ’em if you can.

Their band bio on MySpace is hilarious. Read it. Listen to them:

The Harpoons are a wild bunch. So wild and free you forgot to laugh. Bassist Job Mukkada is a singer-songwriter in his own right, but staunchly avoids the limelight because of his citrus allergy. When not drumming for the Harpoons, drummer Adam Abrutyn manufactures and sells fast-acting valor syrup which is typically drizzled over the temples and groin area. He also enjoys watching pancake wars from aboard his hydraulic space-mobile. Lead guitarist Andrew Langer was raised on rock ‘n’ roll, if you can call Polish sausages rock ‘n’ roll. Which Andrew believes you can. He is nine feet tall and exudes a pulsating blue aura

*OK I was hungover, but is it really my fault? We hosted the FC party that went passed 2 a.m. the night before and I couldn’t get anyone to come with me to the fest that early.
